Extra Members’ Meeting Ahead of the Party Congress

Liberalerna Lund has held an extra members’ meeting ahead of the extraordinary party congress, where the party will decide on continued confidence in Simona Mohamsson and the new direction in the government question.

The discussion was marked by strong engagement, seriousness, and a clear determination to safeguard the party’s values and its future direction.

In light of the current situation, Liberalerna Lund has adopted the following statement:

Statement from the Lund Liberals

The Liberals in Lund stand firm in a liberal policy guided by both heart and mind. For us, liberalism is about giving every individual the freedom and opportunity to shape their own life, while ensuring that society holds together through responsibility, inclusion, and respect for the equal value of every person. Political decisions that protect freedom, responsibility, and human dignity are best made from the political center.

In Lund, our position is clear. We are willing to listen to all parties, but we do not cooperate with all of them. It is entirely unthinkable for the Liberals to cooperate with the Sweden Democrats in local Lund politics. Here, we have shown that it is possible to pursue liberal policies, listen to residents, and take responsibility for Lund’s development without compromising our values.

We will continue to work for a Lund with more freedom and fewer barriers for individuals. Our liberal compass remains steady. We stand up for openness, freedom, and human dignity, and we oppose a line in which the Liberals would govern together with the Sweden Democrats.

OUR BUDGET PROPOSAL!

Together, our parties have presented their shared idea for the municipal budget. Our budget proposal is ambitious and responsible. For the social sphere, our parties will spend 76,5 million crowns more compared to the governing coalition. Our investments are highlighted by 3 main themes:

Welfare sphere:

✅ Decrease in group sizes for kids in primary school, (i.e. more teachers)
✅ More special Teachers (teachers with extra competence in teaching those with needs outside the “norm”) and social teaching groups for groups of students that need extra attention.
✅ Strengthening of daily activities for people with functional variations

Health and quality of life:

✅ Big investments in food quality for both schools and eldercare: more than double compared to the governing coalition
✅ We want to save the pensioners’ restaurants that the governing coalition wants to close
✅ Greater opportunities for physical mobility for elderlies, people with reduced mobility, and kids.

The entirety of Lund needs to live:

✅ More funds allocated to International Citizens Hub (ICH) to facilitate the ease of getting into swedish society for everyone coming to Lund from Abroad.
✅ New open primary schools in the eastern villages (Dalby, Veberöd etc). Open primary schools are free to attend for everyone, including kids (with caretakers) that are not in any ordinary primary school.
✅ The senior card (free rides on busses for those 75+) needs to be valid 24/7, and not only during certain hours.
✅ Citizens’ budget for a greater local democracy and local development. This is a reform we put through last mandate period where 6 million kronor are allocated to the villages, and the villagers themselves can propose and then take the decision on what should be invested in or done to improve the local community. The governing coalition want’s to scrap this reform.

During the last mandate period, our parties have been able to constitute Lund’s profit equalization reserve. Or in plain language, our governing coalition saved a lot of money (hundreds of millions) to be used in the future, which is now. Thanks to a great economic management, we now have the opportunities to get through recession with steady steps forward. Social-democrats and moderates came to a set table with the “barn” full of money. However, the council proposes a hypocritical budget. For instance, they underline to invest 20 million in a greater density of teachers, although, on the other hand, they at the same time pose the schools a saving condition of 23 million crowns. We hope that more parties, who look at results, want to take responsibility of Lund and choose to sustain the Mitteninitiativet budget proposal (L, FNL & C).

In the Lund City Council budget session today, on behalf of 'Mitten Initiativ' (Middle Opposition), the Liberals in Lund raised a motion to add resources to the Lund International Citizen's Hub to be able to increase its work with 'talent recruitment.' The Lund International Citizens Hub does a great job at helping those who come to Lund for work, studies, research, and refuge. Getting into the workforce, particularly for following partners, can be a real challenge, and through initiatives like 'Kick-Start' the LICH provides needed support and this work can increase with more resources.

We in the 'Mitten Initiativ' on City Council view this is an important investment to support Lund's research centers, university, leading medical center, and international companies. It helps us take advantage of the resources in our city in the best possible way, and secures that we keep Lund as a great place to work and live.

While this modest investment did not make it into the budget today, we in the Liberal Party in Lund will not give up so easily and will continue to support our international citizens and the resources that help them become a vital part of our community.

THANK YOU LUND!

The votes are still not completely final from yesterday's election, but in Lund the Liberal Party did very, very well. We moved up more than 4 percentage points since the last election be the second largest party in the City Council, and will be the largest party on the right-side of the aisle. Regardless of who ends up leading the municipality, you can count on a strong Liberal Party to work for Sweden's best schools, a city that is ready for a sustainable future, and a safe, open and inclusive place to live.

YOUR VOTE IS YOUR VOICE, USE IT WELL!

Remember that election day in Sweden is on Sunday, September 11. In 2 of the 3 elections being held that day, non-citizens have the right to vote: Municipal and regional. It is important to use your voice and your vote in these election as most of your taxes stay right here in the community.

In a parliamentary system, there are a number of parties and it is important to get informed. You can get informed by checking out the parties on the web, or you can come down to the main square in town and talk to party representatives.

LUND IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF A BIGGER WORLD!

With its world class university, research centers, well established business sector and high-technology startups, Lund is ranked as one of the innovation centers of the world -- a so-called ‘smart city.’ Many of the big challenges the world faces today could be solved by innovations made in Lund. To use this potential the municipality must keep its sights aimed high, and function as part of the bigger world, to welcome talent and new perspectives from outside.

These days many actors in the political realm resort to populist and national jargon and argue for building borders and limiting change. To keep our place as an innovative and creative global center, the Liberal Party in Lund believes in the opposite approach. An international Lund brings experiences, ideas, culture, and energy from around the world which enriches everyone who lives and works here. To continue to be high on the ranking list we Lund cannot rest on past success and close its doors.

A LUND WITH VIBRANT CULTURE AND RECREATION.

A thriving Lund requires more than just good service from the municipality. It requires a vibrant cultural life including sports, concerts, meeting places and libraries. Many of these activities are driven by voluntary organizations and active parents. The municipality can and should support these non-profit organizations which make our community richer. Culture and recreation are also important drivers of integration where people from different backgrounds and experiences can meet and interact.

Some of the Liberal Parties priorities for culture and recreation include:
• A prominent and accessible cultural center where interesting events and activities are always happening.
• In addition to a well functioning Culture School, we need to continue to develop flexible tools like the ‘music check’ which allows young people and parents to plan music lessons more easily.
• Sports facilities that are available to clubs and support for organizers from the municipality where needed.
• Well-equipped libraries in all parts of our municipality.

In less than two weeks, the people of Sweden will have voted in 3 separate elections. Lund has a significant group of residents that live, work, and pay taxes, and who have a right to vote in local and regional elections, yet might not be fully fluent in English. People from other EU countries who have lived here at least a month before the election, and people from other outside the EU who have lived in Sweden for 3 years.

We are working hard to make our plans and programs available in English, but its a group that is hard to reach. So think about your friends, neighbors, and colleagues who might benefit and share some of this information. Sharing is caring.
