Assessing the environmental impacts of the war in Ukraine.

Since 24 February 2022, the war in Ukraine has caused untold human suffering. It has also brought unprecedented and long-lasting challenges to the environment. With extreme violence still ongoing, it is too early for a comprehensive assessment of the environmental damage, yet there are already worrying indications of the nature and scope of the damage that is growing with each day of the war.

The environmental costs of the war include direct impacts on habitats and species; but also indirect ones in terms of pollution of air, land, and water, or diverted resources.

Already before the war, Ukraine – like other countries – was facing significant environmental challenges, including crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. The country has already warmed by almost 1.5°C over the last 30 years, and the increase in annual mean temperatures could reach 3°C by the middle of the century. The impacts of these changes are increasingly evident, for example in decreased harvest yields.

The war is not only impacting an already stressed natural environment but also preventing efforts to improve the situation. Activities and investments to restore habitats, conserve species, improve protected area management as well as mitigate and adapt to climate change have been disrupted.

UN chief: We must triple the speed of the shift to renewable energy.

At the launch of the latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), on the mitigation of climate change, the UN Secretary-General called for an urgent shift of investments and subsidies from fossil fuels to renewable energy, warning that investing in new fossil fuels infrastructure is “moral and economic madness.”

The report sets out viable, financially sound options in every sector that can keep the possibility of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees alive.

A heatwave at the north pole and collapsed Antarctic ice shelf are reminders to redouble our efforts, and focus on climate.

When policymakers and the public are focused on war in Ukraine and the rising cost of living, it is hard to be reminded of the existential threat posed by rising temperatures. But the extent to which climate has faded from consciousness in the months since the UN conference in Glasgow is frightening.

If we are to avoid the worst effects of global heating, with around half the world’s population said by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to be highly vulnerable, it is imperative to make drastic changes to our global energy system.

Heatwaves at both of Earth’s poles alarm climate scientists.

Antarctic areas reach 40C above normal at same time as north pole regions hit 30C above usual levels.

The rapid rise in temperatures at the poles is a warning of disruption in Earth’s climate systems.

Startling heatwaves at both of Earth’s poles are causing alarm among climate scientists, who have warned the “unprecedented” events could signal faster and abrupt climate breakdown.

Temperatures in Antarctica reached record levels at the weekend, an astonishing 40C above normal in places.

At the same time, weather stations near the north pole also showed signs of melting, with some temperatures 30C above normal, hitting levels normally attained far later in the year.

At this time of year, the Antarctic should be rapidly cooling after its summer, and the Arctic only slowly emerging from its winter, as days lengthen. For both poles to show such heating at once is unprecedented.

One Russian asks another Russian - how much do you earn per year? The other Russian responds - I earn about two Loro Piana jackets!

Vladimir Putin dons a Loro Piana jacket worth nearly 1.5 million Russian roubles (equivalent to around £10,200).
In 2021, the average Russian's annual salary was 678,000 roubles, less than half the cost of the strongman's coat.

Vladimir Putin raged against the West and boasted he was fighting for the 'universal values' of all Russians today while wearing a £10,000 designer jacket as his citizens face a return to Soviet-era poverty.

The leader gave a rousing speech to tens of thousands of supports in Moscow's Luzhniki World Cup stadium where he lauded the success of his 'special military operation' that has seen hospitals, schools and homes bombed to oblivion.
