A Palestinian Village Grapes’ Market is More than a Seasonal Agricultural Event

The opening of the grape market in the Palestinian village of Beit Duqo is more than a seasonal agricultural event. It is a powerful demonstration of Palestinian farmers’ determination to remain on their land and sustain their communities despite a system of land confiscation, settlement expansion, settler attacks and severe restrictions on movement.
Palestinian agriculture has been increasingly squeezed by Israeli occupation restrictions that make it difficult for farmers to reach and cultivate their own land. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), at least 20 percent of documented movement closures imposed by Israeli forces in the West Bank block access to agricultural land, with around 60 percent of those closures consisting of earthmounds and roadblocks. Such restrictions can prevent farmers from reaching fields, transporting produce and getting their harvest to markets.
OCHA reported that more than 1,000 settler attacks causing casualties or property damage had already been recorded across more than 230 West Bank communities since the beginning of 2026.
Earlier assessments by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics estimated direct daily losses in agricultural production at around US$1.6 million as a result of stalled production, with losses increasing further when the destruction of agricultural property, assets and land is taken into account.
Against this backdrop, the grape market in Beit Duqo carries a meaning far beyond the sale of a crop. Every basket of grapes represents a farmer's effort to overcome restrictions, reach the land, harvest what remains and create an income for his or her family.
The farmers of Beit Duqo are showing that Palestinian agriculture is not simply an economic activity. It is a means of survival, a connection to the land and an expression of steadfastness. Despite the pressure placed on their farms and livelihoods, they continue to plant, harvest and sell.

Jerusalem Under Siege: New Settlement Plan Threatens to Sever the City from the West Bank Forever

2,300 new colonial units. 195 dunams of stolen land. One more link in a chain designed to strangle Palestinian Jerusalem.

The Jerusalem Governorate has sounded the alarm over what may be one of the most consequential settlement expansions yet: a plan to grow the Gilo settlement southward, deep into land that has belonged to the Palestinian town of Beit Jala for generations — land still marked by ancient olive trees and orchards that testify, silently but undeniably, to who this land truly belongs to.
