Australia, Finland and Latvia share a commitment to a world governed by rules, not power and force alone. 🇦🇺 🇫🇮 🇱🇻 🇺🇳

Fantastic to see Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong meet with Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen at the UN in New York yesterday, as both our countries campaign for UN Security Council seats for the 2029-2030 term.

Both ministers were also pleased to meet with Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže. Latvia currently serves as a member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term.

As a founding member of the UN and the first President of the Security Council, Australia has been a consistent voice advocating for global peace and security for more than 80 years.

Our priority is to work across continents and regions to prevent conflict, advance ocean and climate security, and promote peaceful, resilient and inclusive digital futures.

Australia is seeking a seat on the United Nations Security Council for 2029-2030.

As an active and ambitious middle power, Australia has a practical contribution to make to international peace and security.

We will listen with respect, partner as equals, protect civilians and defend the UN charter.

Heading overseas this upcoming holiday season? Now is a good time to double-check that your Australian passport is still valid.

Before periods of peak travel, we experience a significant increase in the number of passport applications. Expect a processing time of around 6-8 weeks from the time your completed application is lodged. Incomplete applications will cause further delays.

The Australian community in Latvia is invited to attend a ceremony at the Freedom Monument in Riga on Wednesday, 29 July from 11:20 to 11:40 am, where the Australian National Anthem will be played alongside the Latvian National Anthem at approx 11:30 am.

We warmly encourage Latvian Australians, Australian visitors, and friends of Australia to join us in marking this occasion.

Bring Australian flags and wear Australian national colours to add to the celebration!

Tack Sverige och tack statssekreterare Janse för ert stöd och för gott samarbete!

Thank you to Diana Janse, Sweden’s State Secretary for International Trade, for joining us at an event last month to highlight the many benefits of this year’s Australia-EU announcements.

Ambassador Sagala was honoured to be joined by State Secretary Janse to deliver a briefing on how the Australia-EU Free Trade Agreement, the Australia-EU Security and Defence Partnership and Australia’s association to Horizon Europe from 2027 will deliver many more opportunities for closer ties between our people and our businesses.

These agreements will mean more jobs, more affordable goods and services, more choice for consumers and more connections between Australia and Sweden and the EU.

Ambassador Sagala appreciated the participation of so many business leaders and the support of Austrade and Business Sweden.

Australia stands with Ukraine. 🇦🇺 🇺🇦

The Australian Government will provide an additional $100 million in assistance to Ukraine for critical military equipment. This lasting commitment brings Australia’s overall support for Ukraine to over $1.8 billion, including more than $1.6 billion in military assistance since the start of the conflict.

Our ongoing contribution ensures that Ukraine is receiving the support it needs to make a tangible difference in its defence against Russia’s unjustified and unprovoked aggression.

In partnership with NATO, Australia is supporting Ukraine to secure the critical military equipment and capabilities it needs to defend itself, including air defence capabilities and munitions. Australia was proud to be the first non-NATO contributor to the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List, alongside New Zealand.

The Australian Defence Force also continues to train Armed Forces of Ukraine personnel under Operation Kudu, with training now being conducted in Poland under the Norwegian led multinational Operation Legio.

The Indo-Pacific is home to two-thirds of the world’s people, accounts for 60 percent of global GDP as well as two-thirds of global economic growth and is home to 22 of the world’s 37 megacities. The panel will offer perspectives from the region, outline Sweden’s welcome engagement in the region and discuss our shared interests in a peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

The panel will be moderated by Professor Elin Bjarnegård and will feature Ambassador Mizukoshi of Japan, Ambassador Sagala of Australia, Ambassador Taylor of New Zealand and Professor Erik Melander.
