The Arctic Arts Summit 2026 took place last week in Ubmeje/Umeå, bringing together voices from across the circumpolar world to highlight the vital role of culture and of Indigenous leadership in sustaining vibrant, resilient northern communities.
More than 100 Canadian artists, cultural leaders and institutions, researchers, and partners from across the North attended the Summit. As Canada’s Arctic Ambassador and Head of Delegation, Virginia Mearns, emphasized in her opening remarks, culture is a strategic asset for resilience, a bridge across differences, and a foundation for sustainable futures in the North. Any discussion of Arctic culture must begin with Indigenous Peoples.
The Embassy had the pleasure of hosting two events during the Summit to bring together artists, curators, and institutions from the Arctic. This included an event on Indigenous arts residencies in the Arctic, co-hosted with Aejlies, the Sámi Cultural Center in Dearna/Tärnaby, aimed at fostering connections, exploring new opportunities for collaboration, and supporting Indigenous led cultural exchange — ensuring that Indigenous stories continue to thrive and travel across borders. We also hosted a Canada-Sweden reception designed to foster new ties between governments, institutions, researchers and artists, all in support of the Arctic cooperation and North-North connections pillar of the Canada-Sweden Strategic Partnership. https://www.pm.gc.ca/en/news/statements/2025/11/18/joint-statement-prime-minister-carney-and-prime-minister-kristersson
Canada remains deeply committed to Indigenous arts, cultural sovereignty, and strong northern and Arctic arts ecosystems.
Our sincere thanks to our Sámi and Swedish hosts — Viermie K, Umeå kommun, Region Västerbotten, Kulturrådet, Umeå University — as well as the Arctic Arts Summit Secretariat and all partners who helped make this fourth Arctic Arts Summit such a meaningful space for dialogue and collaboration. And thank you to the many artists from around the Arctic who shared their work as part of the artistic program.
We look forward to the next Arctic Arts Summit in Kalaallit Nunaat/Greenland in 2028.
