The launch of Therme Singapore puts the spotlight on urban wellness tourism, and how Singapore is positioning itself in a space often defined by beach retreats and nature escapes.

Last week’s column in The Business Times examines Singapore’s ambition to establish itself as an urban wellness haven. In the piece, Course Chair for Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Diploma in Tourism & Resort Management Joshua Loh outlines both the constraints and opportunities shaping this shift.

“Singapore faces structural constraints including land scarcity… Our physical density and tropical climate also pose challenges to the development of traditional wellness products,” he notes. Yet these same conditions point to a different model, one built on “convenience, quality assurance and accessibility”, appealing to “time-constrained affluent travelers seeking premium wellness experiences”.

This creates space for offerings such as medical wellness centres, longevity clinics and high-end urban retreats, positioning large-scale developments like Therme Singapore within a broader ecosystem of premium, city-based wellness experiences.

Nurul Huda Nadiah’s career journey took her from banking into early childhood education, where she found her passion working with young children.

After completing an Advanced Certificate in Early Years course with , she became a playgroup form teacher, where planning activities, creating resources, and seeing children respond and grow affirmed her decision.

Wanting to deepen her skills, she applied to Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Diploma in Early Childhood Development & Education through the EAE for Working Adults pathway, building her application around her classroom experience and portfolio.

Now in her final year, Nurul is specialising in early intervention, strengthening her ability to support children with diverse learning needs.

If you have at least two years of relevant work experience and are considering a career switch or skills upgrade, EAE for Working Adults could be a pathway into a full-time diploma.

Meet Chiara Narag, our Business Studies student who turned her love for crochet into CrochetbyC, a small but growing handmade floral business.

What began on peer-to-peer platforms has since evolved into a steady online presence, with Chiara managing school, custom orders and the time-intensive craft behind each piece.

At Ngee Ann Polytechnic, her coursework has sharpened how she approaches branding, customer behaviour and perceived value, informing how she positions CrochetbyC, from her brand story to product design.

That thinking is tested in real settings. Her first pop-up within the NP campus offered a closer look at how customers browse, respond and decide. She will next bring CrochetbyC to Innopoly, an annual innovation and enterprise festival organised by The Sandbox over two days next month.

“The opportunities, resources and encouragement I received at NP make me feel very supported in my entrepreneurial journey and motivate me to continue growing the business,” Chiara shares.

CrochetbyC was recently featured in an article by The Straits Times spotlighting local makers: https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/cant-get-enough-of-cj-hendrys-flower-market-here-are-some-local-makers-you-can-support-instead

Jaydan Yap built his EAE application around experiences he actively pursued at ITE, from participating in international student seminars to volunteering with community service clubs.

These opportunities helped him develop leadership as well as event management, public speaking and problem-solving skills, which he drew on during his EAE interview to articulate his interest in business.

The Year 3 student in NP’s Diploma in Business Studies is now specialising in Marketing, where he is learning how brands connect with people and what influences consumer decisions.

Through EAE, Hovan Chan pursued his interest in automation and engineering, despite not having the strongest grades in math and physics during his time at ITE.

For his application to NP's Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, he drew on his robotics competition experience to show how he applied mechanical design, used data and AI to analyse test results, and refined the robot's performance. By connecting these hands-on experiences to the course, he demonstrated his potential and earned a place in the diploma.

Now in his final year, Hovan has built on that foundation through classroom learning, hands-on training and his specialisation in Automation Design Engineering.

Jing Long’s passion in biomedical engineering grew through hands-on projects at ITE, where he developed an Arduino-based heart rate monitor and a rehabilitation device to enhance grip strength and wrist movement.

During his EAE interview, he spoke about these projects with confidence, using them to show his interest in biomedical engineering and aptitude for hands-on problem-solving.

The current Year 2 student in NP’s Diploma in Biomedical Engineering is now building on these skills by taking on more complex challenges.

Helen See joined RSM Singapore shortly after graduating from NP in 1990. More than three decades later, she continues to grow with the firm, while staying closely connected to the school where it all began.

Today, the School of Business & Accountancy alumna and Partner at RSM - Singapore supports NP students through internships, learning journeys, case studies and conversations about what the world of accountancy really looks like in practice.

“Academic learning gives students a foundation, but industry experience helps them see how that knowledge is used.”

Some students first meet Helen as interns navigating their first professional environment. Years later, some return as colleagues in the industry. For Helen, seeing that progression unfold is what has kept her involved year after year.

Small shifts can make a big difference to an intern’s experience.

A clear start, meaningful work, and thoughtful guidance throughout shape how young talent experience your organization, and how they talk about it long after they leave.

For many, an internship is their first real taste of the working world. The impressions they form, and the stories they take with them, matter. Even if they don’t become your next hire, they could become your organisation’s strongest advocates.

In this article, we unpack three simple ways supervisors can create internship experiences worth talking about. Read more: https://www.np.edu.sg/connect/np-impact/turn-your-intern-into-your-brand-advocate-1
