Remember the last time you took a leap of faith? That's exactly what happened in Jurong in the 1960s — and it changed everything.

From swampland to industrial hub, Jurong is now shaping up to be Singapore's largest mixed-use district outside the city centre.

A street party took over Joo Chiat Road last weekend! 🎉

With cars making way for people, there was more space to walk, cycle and experience the neighbourhood in a different way.

As part of the festivities, Urban Redevelopment Authority transformed a car park lot into a cosy corner for people to sit, chat and enjoy the neighbourhood. It was a small glimpse of how spaces usually meant for cars can be reimagined as community spaces for people to enjoy.

The street party was part of Land Transport Authority’s World Car-Free Day 2026 programme, where a stretch of Joo Chiat Road from East Coast Road to Dunman Road went car-free.

Organised in partnership with the Katong-Joo Chiat Business Association, Katong Culture and co-created with community partners, local businesses and residents, there was plenty to discover while soaking in Joo Chiat’s vibrant street life and unique heritage.

💡 Did you know? Joo Chiat is part of the Historic East identity corridor. URA is working with residents and stakeholders to strengthen the area’s unique character and create inviting public spaces, so that these well-loved neighbourhoods can continue to be enjoyed for generations to come.

Join us in going car-lite by walking, cycling or taking public transport! 🚶‍♀️ 🚲 🚌

Joo Chiat has a new stretch of colour to explore. 🎨

Once a familiar way through, this back alley is now home to a 91-metre floor mural inspired by the open canal that once ran here.

Created by resident Hannah James in collaboration with the Katong-Joo Chiat Business Association, local artist soph O, residents and nearby businesses, it adds another colourful detail to a part of Singapore known for its heritage and character.

Got an idea for a space in your neighbourhood? The Lively Places Fund co-funds projects of up to S$20,000.

There’s a network beneath Marina Bay that most of us don’t see, but many rely on to keep cool every day. ❄️

28 buildings, including Marina Bay Sands, Fullerton Bay Hotel and Marina Bay Financial Centre, are connected to the Marina Bay district cooling network, which provides shared and more energy-efficient cooling.

Planning for shared infrastructure underground started decades ago, making it possible to build a network like this. And it’s set to grow further.

Swipe to see how it works and what’s next.

📍Did you know before The URA Centre stood here, this site was home to a school that played a significant role in Singapore’s educational history?

We’ve recently supported the unveiling of a heritage marker by Singapore Kadayanallur Muslim League (SKML) at the URA Centre along Kadayanallur Street, to commemorate the former Umar Pulavar Tamil School.

Founded in 1946 by SKML, the school went on to become the first Tamil-medium secondary school in Southeast Asia in 1960.

Following Singapore's independence, Tamil was recognised as one of the nation’s four official languages, reflecting the significance of Tamil education in shaping Singapore's multicultural identity.

By working with communities to share the stories behind our built heritage, we hope more people will discover and appreciate the places that have shaped our city.
