The visible flame is not the end of the burning.

During Seventh Month, the designated joss-paper burners beside our HDB blocks are there for a reason. They contain the burning and keep it away from buildings, electrical equipment, parked vehicles and vegetation.

When making offerings:

✅Use the designated burner provided by the Town Council.
✅Burn the joss paper in small batches and keep it inside the burner.
✅Stay with the burner while it is in use.
✅Before leaving, check that no incense or embers are still smouldering.
✅Clear food offerings and litter after the prayers.

Respect is not only in how the ritual begins. It is also in how we leave the space: with the last ember fully out.

Owning an extinguisher is one thing. Knowing the four steps is another.

PULL the pin.
AIM at the base of the fire.
SQUEEZE the lever.
SWEEP from side to side.

Only attempt to use an extinguisher when the fire is small, the extinguisher is suitable, and you have a clear exit behind you. If the fire is spreading, smoke is building or you are unsure, leave and call 995.

Save these four steps and review them with your household.

✔️ Cloths, paper and packaging clear of heat sources
✔️ No candle or open flame left unattended

It takes seconds to check. Coming back to deal with smoke takes far longer.

Six distinct fire incidents were confirmed in public reports from 17 to 23 August. No deaths were reported in this window. Three people were taken to hospital, and more than 130 people were evacuated from homes and a campus wing.

18 Aug - Fernvale: A kitchen fire at Block 408B Fernvale Road. Nobody was home. SCDF forced entry and put it out. About 10 people were evacuated. No injuries were reported.

18 Aug - NAFA: A workshop fire involving air-handling machinery at 80 Bencoolen Street. About 50 people were evacuated. No injuries were reported.

20 Aug - Buangkok: A bedroom fire at Block 979B Buangkok Crescent. About 60 people were evacuated. One elderly resident was taken to hospital for cuts on the feet and later discharged. A neighbour reportedly used a fire extinguisher and helped three people leave the unit.

21 Aug - BKE: A Traffic Police vehicle caught fire on the slip road into the Seletar Expressway. Two officers were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

21 Aug - Toa Payoh: A car engine fire at the Block 148 Lorong 1 Toa Payoh carpark. No injuries were reported.

22 Aug - Bukit Batok: A living-room fire in a maisonette at Block 628 Bukit Batok Central. More than 10 people were evacuated. No injuries were reported.

Buying one extinguisher and hoping it covers every fire is not a complete safety plan.

Start with the risks that are actually present:

Kitchen and ordinary combustibles: Choose equipment approved for the relevant fire classes, such as the COMBAT 3L Water Mist extinguisher for Class A, B and F fires.

Where does the PMA charge at night?

If the answer is simply "wherever it is parked", take another look at the setup. Charging in a shared corridor or void deck puts the device and its cable directly in the route neighbours may need during an emergency.

Before charging:

• Move it fully inside the home to a clear, well-ventilated spot away from the doorway and escape route.
• Use the charger supplied or recommended by the manufacturer.
• Place the device on a hard, flat surface away from combustible items.
• Stay nearby while it charges. Do not leave it charging overnight.
• Keep the shared corridor and void deck clear.
• Stop using the battery if it is damaged, swollen or unusually hot.

A safer charging habit protects the rider, the household and the neighbours who share the block.

Tonight, check the actual charging spot, not the one you assume is safe.

Smoke can reduce visibility quickly. A corridor that feels passable in daylight may be much harder to navigate during an emergency.

Do a quick check tonight:

1. Is there at least 1.2 m of clear passage?
2. Are shoes, parcels and prams outside the escape line?
3. Can the gate and door open fully?
4. Could a neighbour still pass safely?
5. Does everyone at home know to leave, call 995 and stay out?

Clear one object from the escape route tonight. It is a small job with a very practical purpose.

Oil and water do not mix, especially when the oil is burning.

If a pan catches fire:
- Turn off the heat or gas supply, but only if it is safe to do so.
- Cover the cookware with a lid. Do not move the pan.
- Never pour water onto the burning oil.

If the fire is spreading, smoke is building or you are unsure, alert others, get out and call 995.

For commercial kitchens, prevention also extends above the grill. Grease can accumulate in filters and exhaust ducting, giving fire another route to spread. Keep these systems cleaned and maintained.

Save this before the next busy meal service.
