It can be difficult to accept that someone you care about may have violent extremist thoughts. If you suspect that someone you know might be radicalised, avoid confronting or agitating them as this may push them further down that path.

Even if you are unsure, you should reach out to ISD.

Early intervention can make a difference - you could save your family or friend from harming themselves or others, and they will be given the timely help they need.

Call the ISD hotline at 1800-2626-473. Your identity will be protected.

People are not born with extremist views. Radicalisation is a process.

It starts off innocently enough: a joke, a meme, an opinion. The messaging evolves and becomes divisive. “Don’t trust these people.” “It’s their fault.” “If we get rid of them, we get rid of the problem.”

Social media becomes an echo chamber, amplifying the distrustful and destructive mindset.

In no time at all, curiosity can turn into hostility. The vulnerable may begin to see weapons as a source of power and respond to their frustrations through violence.

How do we go from here? Look out for our next post to find out.

On this day, SQ117 was hijacked by four Pakistani terrorists, who demanded the release of six key Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) activists from jail.

The successful resolution of the hijack was a multi-agency effort. ISD played a critical role in collecting tactical intelligence on the hijackers, which informed the government’s decision to storm the plane after the hijackers issued an ultimatum and threatened to kill the hostages. An ISD officer, who was part of the negotiation team, spoke to the hijackers in Urdu, causing them to rush to the cockpit. This diversion allowed the Singapore Armed Forces’ Special Operations Force to storm the plane.

Within minutes, the hijackers were neutralised. All crew and passengers were rescued.

The SQ117 hijack is a solemn reminder that Singapore may be indirectly but significantly impacted by foreign conflicts.
