Drawing from personal memories, historical records, and archival materials, the "Art Remembers" exhibition offers alternative readings of the region’s past through works across photography, video, print, and digital mediums.

"Lai Foong Moi: Crossings" is now open in our Dalam Singapore space, the first solo presentation of trailblazing Nanyang artist Lai Foong Moi since the 1960s. Explore how she captured everyday life in Singapore and Malaya during the 1960s. Through portraiture, still life, and landscape painting, she offers a glimpse into the people, places and changing ways that shaped Singapore during this pivotal period.

Some of Singapore's most defining moments happened right here at the Gallery.

In 1959, a committee led by then Deputy Prime Minister Dr Toh Chin Chye designed Singapore's National Flag. Its five stars represent democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality, while the crescent moon symbolises a young nation on the rise. The flag was unveiled on the City Hall steps before becoming Singapore's official National Flag upon independence in 1965.

Today, the Gallery continues to connect people with Singapore’s story through the history embedded within our walls, and through the art and experiences that invite us to reflect on who we are and how far we’ve come.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Indonesian artist Nasirun (1965–2026), whose practice played a significant role in the development of contemporary art in Indonesia and Southeast Asia over the past four decades.

Working across different media, including painting and installation, Nasirun often drew on the iconography of Javanese wayang traditions to comment on social and cultural change in contemporary Indonesia. He was also known as an avid collector of works by his predecessors, as well as glass paintings, sketches, drawings, periodicals, and other archival materials. His collection has made significant contributions to research on overlooked Indonesian artists, including Umi Dachlan and Emiria Sunassa.

As we remember Nasirun’s life and contributions to contemporary art in the region, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the many audiences who engaged with his work over the years.

We are honoured to hold several of his works in National Collection, including "Wayang Multinasional", painted in 1999, a few years after he graduated from Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI, Indonesian Art Institute) in 1994. Depicting grotesque figures drawn from wayang characters, the painting can be read as a commentary on multifaceted crises Indonesia faced in the aftermath of the 1997-98 global economic recession and political upheaval.
