Phub Dorji

"Born in the village of Dop Sari in Paro Valley, my days as a young boy growing up in this unspoiled Kingdom were filled with many carefree memories and appreciation of the purity of my surroundings. As soon as I started on the professional course for guiding in Bhutan, it dawned on me that this was a career that came naturally to me. Remembering the names and dates that delineated the

history of my country, Bhutan, came easily and it is with a great sense of pride that I recount the important dates and facts of the country I was born in. To add to this , guiding allowed me to still enjoy the freedom of the outdoors; whether it's a day hike across a mountain pass or a 3 day overnight camp along the Druk Path. Having done the Snowman's Trek and with my 15 years of experience as a professional guide in Bhutan, you can depend on my ability to ensure that your journey in this Kingdom will be well thought out and suited to your interests and ability. The last 7 years as a guide for a luxury resort has allowed me to fine tune my skills in guiding travelers who are discerning in what they would like to experience on their journey through this Kingdom." Ee-Cheng (1960 - 2016)

"In 1991, I stepped onto the island of Bali for the first time and was totally enchanted with this magical place. This connection with Bali was further sealed in 2005 when we built Amala Villas in Ubud; a private fully serviced villa for holiday rentals. It sits in the middle of paddy fields with Mount Agung as it's backdrop. Since then it has enjoyed an increasing popularity and success, with many guests returning and enjoying the luxury of being looked after in their private holiday home. Almost 18 years later, I stepped into a equally magical Himalayan Kingdom - Bhutan; and that same overwhelming feeling of identifying with something so close to my heart returned. Again, as with Bali, I kept returning to revisit this special connection and place. Bhutan has inspired me to work with it's devoted people and this started first with the Youth Development Fund's (YDF) souvenir production centre and more recently with the Pema Choling nunnery in Tang Valley. With this great love for an enchanting Kingdom, and experience in providing private personalised vacations - Amala Travel was born. Together with my business partner, Phub Dorji whose 7 years with a luxury resort in Bhutan has honed his skills in guiding the discerning traveller, we offer you unique and memorable itineraries and attention to all the details that would make your journey in this Kingdom unforgettable."

Before the mountains, Kathmandu.

Our journey to Nepal’s Happy Place begins with two nights at Dwarika’s, where centuries-old Newari craftsmanship is woven into the very fabric of the hotel.

What began with one man’s desire to preserve Kathmandu’s disappearing architectural heritage has become a three-generation legacy - part hotel, part living museum. From here, we explore the temples, stupas and historic squares of Kathmandu, before journeying east into the Himalayas.

There is another side to the Himalayas.

One where the days unfold between ancient monasteries, mountain trails and quiet moments with the Sherpa communities who call these valleys home. Where you might walk the land alongside local monks, share stories around a fire, wake to breakfast overlooking the mountains, or find a little stillness through yoga and meditation.

This December, we return to the Himalayas for an intimate group journey, spending 8 days exploring a quieter, lesser-seen side of Nepal.

Ladakh’s season isn’t over just yet.

As summer gives way to autumn, the valleys begin to turn gold, the trails grow quieter and crisp, clear days make September and early October a beautiful time to explore the region on foot.

From hikes through remote mountain landscapes to slow days spent between monasteries and villages, this is Ladakh at a different rhythm. Quieter, cooler and washed in the colours of fall.

The season runs into October, and there is still time to experience it for yourself. Travel through Ladakh with Amala, thoughtfully and at your own pace.

A few days ago, we shared the story of the sā Ladakh Biennale from afar. Now, we’re experiencing it as part of one of our journeys through Ladakh.

Here, the Biennale feels less like an exhibition you visit and more like something you encounter along the way. Art unfolds across villages, monasteries and vast mountain landscapes, where the setting becomes inseparable from the work itself.

Here are just few glimpses from the journey, captured along the way.

Happening now in Ladakh.

“Not every gallery has walls. Some stretch across mountain valleys, ancient monasteries, and villages where culture has quietly endured for centuries.”

Set more than 3,000 metres above sea level along the Leh–Kargil corridor, the sā Ladakh Biennale reimagines how contemporary art is experienced. Rather than a traditional white-cube exhibition, it unfolds across landscapes, monasteries and villages, placing artistic practice within the ecological, cultural and social fabric of the region.

Under this year’s theme, Signals from Another Star, the Biennale explores regeneration, learning and our relationship with land, memory and climate, a reminder that some of the world’s most thought-provoking cultural experiences happen far beyond the traditional gallery walls.

What if travel could do more than help us discover the world? What if it could help restore it?

Rewilding is about giving nature the opportunity to recover by protecting habitats, restoring biodiversity and supporting the return of native wildlife. When ecosystems regain their natural balance, they become healthier and more resilient.

As purposeful travel continues to grow, every journey can help protect wild places, support local communities and contribute to the long-term future of these extraordinary landscapes.

Patagonia feels like a force of nature.

Summer brings long days, wildflower meadows, glacier landscapes and the chance to watch condors ride the thermals above Torres del Paine. From the working estancias of Cerro Guido to the remote quiet of Eolo Lodge and the privileged access of Explora, this is one of the world’s great journeys.

Seven destinations. One question: where are you ending the year?

New Zealand. Beyond Queenstown.

Most visitors arrive with a familiar version of New Zealand in mind. We’re drawn to another one.

A country of vast private landscapes, empty coastlines, ancient forests and extraordinary lodges that feel inseparable from their surroundings. From the remote coastline of Annandale on the Banks Peninsula, to the alpine setting of Rosewood Matakauri above Lake Wakatipu, and the geothermal landscapes surrounding Huka Lodge, this is New Zealand at its most rewarding.
Not because of how much there is to do, but because of how much space there is to explore.
The further you go, the more rewarding it becomes.

Three days ago, Kyoto came to Singapore.

Together with our partners, we welcomed a Geiko, a Maiko and their Okami for two intimate evenings inspired by the traditions of the ozashiki - the private banquets that have shaped Kyoto’s cultural life for centuries.

Through seasonal dances, music, conversation and traditional games, guests gained rare insight into a world few visitors to Japan ever experience, hearing directly from the women who continue these traditions today.

At Amala, we believe that access to experiences like these fosters a deeper appreciation for the people, traditions and cultural heritage that make a destination truly unique.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the evenings so memorable.

Japan in winter is often associated with snow-covered villages, ski slopes and bustling cities.
But some of our favourite experiences lie elsewhere. On Yakushima, ancient cedar forests disappear into mist and cloud, while on Naoshima, contemporary art and architecture take on a different character in the quieter winter months. Together, they reveal a side of Japan that feels slower, more atmospheric and surprisingly uncrowded. Along the way, we love pairing these destinations with stays at Azumi Setoda and Tenku no Mori, as well as a visit to the remarkable Simose Art Museum.
