At the Singapore Garden Festival Landscape Design Challenge, the ITE College East team “Retro Reel Collective” clinched gold by creatively using plastic bottle caps, recycled wires, and mushroom cultivation waste to craft sculptures paired with air plants, producing a nostalgic yet eco friendly garden that fused traditional values with modern sustainability. The competition required students to design and build gardens within four hours, with judging based on design ex*****on, plant suitability, and project management.

Meet Dr Nicholas Chan.

I visited ITE College East to engage students recently and heard from school leaders of an alumni's continued and quiet dedication to ITE in wanting to mentor and volunteer. He comes back regularly to engage students every few months at his own time.

I reached out over email to ask if we could meet over coffee, and I was glad he obliged to share his story with me.

I learnt that he had dropped out of school at Sec 3 for a variety of reasons and challenges. He took 3 subjects at O Levels as a private candidate. He completed Nursing at ITE College East, then went to do a Nursing Diploma at Nanyang Polytechnic. He didn't stop there, and went on to read Medicine at Yong Loo Lin Medical School at National University of Singapore.

A longer than usual route it was for him. Now at 30yrs old, he's doing his National Service as a Medical Officer. When he ORDs, he will embark for specialist training under the National Preventive Medicine Residency Programme.

I left our conversation inspired. He felt that the key turning point was the nurturing, guidance and support he received from the educators at ITE. It had helped him find his footing and confidence again.

What blew me away most was his resilience and willingness to keep going, to challenge existing narratives and to trailblaze a path of possibility for others. Not everything in life goes our way all of the time and for Nicholas, there was a time where nothing seemed to go his way at all. Yet, he kept going and gave his best at every plot twist and turn.

Nicholas carries with him a personality that is positive and hopeful, even in adversity. I promised him I would share this so that others could benefit from learning of his story, just as I did.
