This National Day, we celebrate the people who make Singapore stronger. One of them is Emily Tan.

At 34, Emily lives with a mild intellectual disability, but resilience has always guided her journey. After working as a hotel housekeeper, she upskilled through PCS and found purpose nurturing young minds in a preschool. When downsizing led to job loss, she persevered, retrained through PCS' CareAbilities Programme, and today brings joy to seniors at a senior care centre.

Emily didn't need someone to change who she was.
She needed someone to believe in what she could become.

CAP Interns Visit Filos Active Ageing Centre Health Carnival
Our CareAbilities Programme (CAP) interns attended the Health Carnival organised by Filos Active Ageing Centre (AAC) in collaboration with 15 AACs within the district. The event featured health talks, interactive activities, karaoke, and lively deejay performances.

Our interns had the opportunity to engage with seniors and learn about the diverse services offered by Active Ageing Centres. They also toured Filos AACโ€™s facilities, including Gym Tonic, where staff demonstrated the use of the health app for warm-up and cool-down exercises. The visit provided valuable exposure to the roles and responsibilities of Care Support Assistants. Thank you, Filos AAC, for the invitation and partnership. We look forward to future collaborations!

Our CareAbilities (CAP) trainees had the opportunity to join the ๐‘ด๐’†๐’‚๐’๐’” ๐’๐’ ๐‘พ๐’‰๐’†๐’†๐’๐’” (๐‘ด๐‘ถ๐‘พ) ๐’‘๐’“๐’๐’ˆ๐’“๐’‚๐’Ž๐’Ž๐’†, delivering meals to 22 beneficiaries. This enriching experience allowed participants to develop their navigation and wayfinding skills while learning how to engage and communicate with seniors in a respectful and meaningful manner.
More than just meal deliveries, the activity encouraged independence, social confidence, and a deeper understanding of the importance of community support. The smiles and appreciation received from beneficiaries made the experience even more rewarding.

We were delighted to host Methodist Welfare Services at PCS Cedar Tree AAC Care - Potong Pasir 108, and thank them for gaining deeper insights into inclusive employment while partnering us in this shared mission.

During the visit, our guests had the opportunity to observe our ๐‘ช๐’‚๐’“๐’†๐‘จ๐’ƒ๐’Š๐’๐’Š๐’•๐’Š๐’†๐’” ๐‘ท๐’“๐’๐’ˆ๐’“๐’‚๐’Ž๐’Ž๐’† (๐‘ช๐‘จ๐‘ท) interns in action. The interns befriended seniors and assisted with social and recreational activities โ€” demonstrating how inclusive employment builds confidence and creates meaningful impact. It was encouraging to hear that the MWS team gained deeper insights into ๐‘ช๐‘จ๐‘ท and were impressed by what our interns are capable of achieving.

๐‘ช๐‘จ๐‘ท addresses a critical gap: persons with special needs often face under-employment, while community care organisations face manpower shortages โ€” highlighting the opportunity for community care organisations to build a sustainable pool of talent.

They applied what they learnt in the classroom and helped facilitate games such as Boccia, Disc Golf, and Rummy O, while encouraging active participation and social interaction.
Similar to this session, CAP features many opportunities for hands-on learning through simulated training and internships. This helps trainees apply what they have learnt to become competent Care Support Assistants once they graduate.

Trainees actively engaged in discussions and hands-on activities that encouraged collaboration and strengthened their problem-solving skills. These are key skills that are vital in the workplace and help boost the employability of trainees.
