Asia-Europe Foundation - ASEF promotes understanding strengthens relationships and facilitates cooperation among the people from Asia and Europe.

ASEF enhances dialogue, enables exchanges and encourages collaboration across the thematic areas of culture, education, governance & economy, media, public health and sustainable development. Founded in 1997, ASEF is an intergovernmental not-for-profit organisation located in Singapore. It is the only institution of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). Together with about 750 partner organisations, ASEF has conducted more than 700 projects, mainly conferences, seminars and workshops. Over 40,000 Asians and Europeans have participated in its activities, and reached a much wider audience through its networks, web-portals, publications, exhibitions and lectures.

💡 Today, the Seminar revisited the insights and outcomes that emerged from the three discussions yesterday. The reported on and how , , and efforts intersect with and complement or depend on one another. We thank Ms Indah SAVITRI (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia) for chairing the discussion, alongside our rapporteurs, Mrs Virginia BRÁS GOMES (Vice-President, the Geneva Human Rights Hub/GHRH), Prof Vitit MUNTARBHORN (Professor of Law, Chulalongkorn University), and Dr NARANTUYA Ganbat (Commissioner, National Human Rights Commission of Mongolia).

🧩 The Closing Panel “Connecting the Dots: Strengthening Human Rights Protection Across Local, Regional and Global Levels” highlighted actionable steps for local human rights institutions aligning with regional mechanisms and global frameworks, including the UN treaty bodies and OHCHR. 🌏 Road to the Multi-sectoral Dialogue on One Health.

That human, animal and environmental health are connected is by now widely accepted. What remains difficult is putting it into practice: working arrangements between ministries that function beyond the signing of a memorandum, data systems health authorities can use in routine work, and national frameworks that set out responsibilities among institutions.

Progress across Asia and Europe has been uneven. Preparedness tends to fail in the space between what has been committed to and what is actually being done.
From Principle to Practice dedicates Day One to operationalising One Health, global frameworks, including the recommendations of the Lancet One Health Commission, alongside case studies of cross-sectoral governance. Day Two applies that lens to climate change and Emerging Infectious Diseases.

Convened by the ASEF Public Health Network with the Center for Global Health at TUM, the Department of Neurology, TUM University Hospital, and knowledge partner SingHealth Duke-NUS Global Health Institute.

Today in Ulaanbaatar, the ASEF team, led by Amb Beata STOCZYŃSKA was delighted to welcome participants and distinguished guests to the opening of the 24th Informal ASEM Seminar on Human Rights.
Co-organised and hosted by Монгол Улсын Гадаад Харилцааны Яам Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia and the National Human Rights Commission of Mongolia (NHRCM) Монгол Улсын Хүний эрхийн Үндэсний Комисс, the programme commenced with a speech by Dr Sunjid DUGAR, Chief Commissioner, NHRCM.

This was followed by keynote speeches:

🤝 ASEF’s Executive Director, Ambassador Beata Stoczyńska, had the great honour of meeting HE Mr Byambatsogt Sandag, Chairman of the State Great Hural of Mongolia, and HE Ms Battsetseg Batmunkh, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Mongolia.

⏳ 3 days to go! : The of – From Local to Global

We are excited to welcome our ASEM Partners, government representatives, National Human Rights Institutions, as well as academics and civil society advocates at the launch of the 24th Informal ASEM Seminar on Human Rights next week in ! 🇲🇳

🤝 Three will provide the participants focused discussions to examine the different dimensions of human rights protection before their findings are brought back to plenary, for and future discussion:

✅ Working Group #1: Human Rights Protection at the Global Level

✅ Working Group #2: Human Rights Protection at the Regional Level

✅ Working Group #3: Human Rights Protection at the Domestic Level

🌏 Together over 80 participants from across and will identify gaps, opportunities, and priorities that are specific to their international and local contexts, in collaboration with our , , , and esteemed guests.

🤝 ASEMHRS24 will be held from 12–14 October in partnership with Mongolia’s Монгол Улсын Гадаад Харилцааны Яам Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia and the National Human Rights Commission of Mongolia Монгол Улсын Хүний эрхийн Үндэсний Комисс, ASEF’s co-organisers. The Seminar is also supported by ASEF’s longtime partners and co-funders, Department of Foreign Affairs, Republic of the Philippines, Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, also co-funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark Udenrigsministeriet.

🧩 Following the seminar, a Capacity-building Training will be held on 15–16 October, in partnership with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). Through its role supporting the UN human rights mechanisms, OHCHR holds unparalleled expertise in the development, interpretation, and implementation of international human rights standards.

🌏 Road to the Multi-sectoral Dialogue on One Health.
The conditions that determine whether an infectious disease emerges and spreads are largely set outside the health sector. Public health institutions are held accountable for the outcomes, but control few of the inputs.

Climate change is what makes this urgent now, and it is not a projection. Shifting vector ranges, rising waterborne risk and increased opportunity for zoonotic spillover are already showing up in surveillance data across both regions.

The ASEF Public Health Network convenes From Principle to Practice with the Center for Global Health at TUM, the Department of Neurology, TUM University Hospital, and knowledge partner SingHealth Duke-NUS Global Health Institute.

🌷Over 40 primary and secondary students and teachers, from international and Singaporean schools, joined us at ASEF for a Youth Councils Session around the exhibition.

Through Anne Frank's story, young students from Asia and Europe opened up about discrimination, belonging and inclusion 💬 More than 80 years on, her diary remains a powerful starting point for these conversations 🕊️

🧭 What does the future of human rights protection look like?

🏛 On 12–14 October 2026, the 24th Informal ASEM Seminar on Human Rights (ASEMHRS24) will bring together ASEM Partner countries, government representatives, National Human Rights Institutions, as well as academics and civil society advocates in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – this year’s host country.

🤝 Under the theme "The Future of Human Rights – From Local to Global", will explore how protection can be strengthened at the , and levels, and how international norms can be adapted to contexts. Through sessions, discussions and , participants will identify priorities for Asia and Europe and develop concrete recommendations for a rapidly changing political, economic and technological landscape.

🧩 On 15–16 October, a capacity-building training led by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights ( ) will follow the Seminar. Drawing on OHCHR's leading expertise in international human rights standards, it will focus on practical skills for implementation, monitoring and follow-up.

🎉ASEFClassNet19 in the news | Celebrating our Innovative Teaching Practice (ITP) teams!

We are delighted to see the achievements of ASEFClassNet19 educators featured by Borneo Bulletin, following the recognition of Brunei Darussalam educator Nurulhazwa Hashiem and her team, Project Autonomy, with the Gold Award at the ASEFClassNet19 Conference in Innsbruck, Austria.

The Gold Award was one of five ASEFClassNet19 Innovation Awards in 2026 presented during the Conference, recognising educator teams whose Innovative Teaching Practices demonstrated creativity, collaboration and a strong commitment to strengthening teacher and learner agency in the age of AI.

Behind each award was a much longer journey! Over the course of ASEFClassNet19, educators from across Asia and Europe worked in international teams for 7 months to co-design Innovative Teaching Practices, adapt them to different educational contexts, pilot them with learners in their schools, and learn from one another through the process.

The Innovation Awards celebrated not only the ideas presented in Innsbruck, but also the collaboration, experimentation and professional judgement that brought those ideas to life in classrooms.
