On 16 August 2026, ICA officers at Woodlands Checkpoint foiled an attempt to smuggle duty-unpaid ci******es into Singapore via a Malaysia-registered car.

ICA Search and Examination officers directed the vehicle for enhanced checks and uncovered more than 100 cartons and 400 packets of duty-unpaid ci******es concealed within the bonnet of the vehicle.

The 28-year-old male Malaysian driver was arrested in connection with the case. The exhibits and suspect were referred to Singapore Customs for further investigation.

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) will be carrying out construction works at Tuas Checkpoint from 1 September to support the progressive implementation of the Automated Passenger Clearance System (APCS) for cars. The works are expected to be completed in late 2027.

The works will involve the progressive removal of existing car counters manned by ICA officers and replacing them with APCS lanes. To facilitate the works, parts of the departure car zones will be temporarily closed in phases during the construction works.

When operational, APCS will allow drivers and passengers travelling in cars to complete immigration clearance without leaving their vehicles by using a QR code together with biometric verification.

ICA has put in place road signages, road safety markers and hoardings to guide travellers safely around the affected lanes and zones. Travellers are advised to check traffic conditions at the land checkpoints before embarking on their journey and to observe lane discipline and traffic rules. Travellers are also encouraged to use QR codes for faster clearance at the land checkpoints.

ICA seeks the publicโ€™s patience and understanding while the construction works are carried out.

On 10 August 2026, ICA officers at Woodlands Checkpoint foiled an attempt to smuggle duty-unpaid ci******es via a Malaysia-registered car into Singapore.

ICA Search & Examine officers directed the vehicle for enhanced checks and found more than 700 cartons and over 100 packets of duty-unpaid ci******es concealed in various modified compartments of the vehicle.

The 30-year-old male Malaysian driver was arrested in connection with the case. The exhibits and suspect were referred to Singapore Customs for further investigation.
