I’ve been picking up watercolor classes lately, and tried practising some techniques last night. Not perfect, but I wanted to share my progress in trying something new hehe. This is the red-crested turaco and the spiny turtle that I saw in a trip down to the zoo on Monday (swipe for the reference pictures).

It’s been really fun to try watercolors again. I actually used to paint customised watercolor cards for people back when I first graduated from secondary school. So getting to learn it formally now feels like a full circle moment :) I’m learning that watercolor paint really has a mind of its own (reminds me a lot of myself haha). It’s fluid, a little messy, and wants to flow where it wants to flow. It asks me to be patient enough to plan things out before committing, but also fast enough to blend the colors in before everything dries. And because I can’t edit and layer to my heart’s content, it asks me to release control of the outcome too.

These days, with all the meetings, admin things, client work, etc. it’s actually been hard for me to find inspiration to paint for myself again. So it’s been really fun to try something for the sheer joy of it :) Can’t wait to see where this leads hehe.

A little while ago, this floor mural, “The Light Within Us”, was reinstated back into its original condition. It brought up a lot of feelings for me - there was sadness, there was grief. But more than anything, a deep sense of gratitude to have even been given this opportunity to bring a little bit of color into Ghim Moh, and for the amazing memories and bonds that were formed in the process. This post is to celebrate the project and everyone who had a hand in bringing it to life. Though the courtyard at Ghim Moh is blank again, the stories shared by the seniors at Lions’ Befrienders, the energy of the students, and the warmth of everyone who stopped by will always remain, and that is something that I will treasure forever.

The illustrations for “The Three Hungry Microbes” have made it into the finalist category for the Illustrator of the year award!! Was not really sure what to expect when I submitted the illustrations for this award, this being my very first foray into children’s books. But was really happy to wake up to this news a few days ago 🥹🌸

Many rounds of edits were made to create this book, and it would not have been possible without the inputs of .pui and even fellow children’s book illustrators who helped give feedback 2 AFCCs ago. Thank you .sg , and congrats to all the finalists too!! :)) We did it hehe, yayyyy!

A recap of our Living Storybook sessions!

Back when Cuifen and I were were creating our picture book, “The Three Hungry Microbes”, Cuifen had the idea to bring the story to life in a space that she was already tending to - Boon Lay Nature Garden. It’s a communal experimental gardening space located in a park across the road from Boon Lay MRT. After the book was published, we then workshopped the idea and decided to run sessions that would allow young families to enjoy and create nature-inspired artworks. And this was the final outcome! :)

Over 2 Saturdays, we transformed the space with cardboard cut-outs, bunting, and little co-created artworks, and had a series of activities too! Including:
📖 Storytelling
🔍 Mini Scavenger Hunt 👀
🍂 Compost-Making
🌼 Nature Mandala (Where the families got to color their own custom birds too!)
🎨 Doodling on a travelling artwork

Let’s paint together!

, the HYC team and I have been working on a project called “Seeds of Tomorrow”, a series of murals that inspire care for ourselves, others and the Earth. Since January, we have been gathering ideas and doodles from the community, and worked together with the HYC team to synthesise these insights into 3 vibrant designs.

Everyone is welcome to paint, whether you are a seasoned artist or simply want to try something new! These will be guided sessions where materials are provided. So come and join us for a fun afternoon of painting :)

Thank you to everyone who came down for our book launch at !

It was such a fun experience being able to share our story with a group of young kids, swipe to see a snippet of the storytelling ✨ This time, we decided to add more dramatic elements to engage the kids better in the story, and it’s always lots of fun when the kids respond enthusiastically in return too 🥹🌱

Woohoo!! Our book is now available at the festival bookstore at the Asian Festival of Children’s Content ( ). It’s really cool to see it stocked here, especially after participating in AFCC in different capacities over the past few years.

Come check it out at the atrium of the national library, and also browse the wide variety of children’s and young adult books while you’re at it.

Our book is also available for borrowing at our public libraries, as well as for sale at Kinokuniya (Takashimaya outlet).

The Three Hungry Microbes is coming to…Asian Festival of Children’s Content !!

After attending, and contributing to AFCC for the past few years, we’re really happy to announce that .pui are finally able to showcase our own children’s book at the festival :) This book is a whimsical story based on the science of compost-making, told from the perspective of 3 very hungry soil microbes, who are fed food scraps by a kind lady. This year’s theme is “The Worlds We Make”, and is all about how stories can be powerful drivers of action and imagination for children, and investigating how they contribute towards the world that we wish to create in the future.

When .pui and I were writing the story, we often imagined what it would be like to experience the world of soil in an immersive way. How might we bring this world alive for children, and help them to understand that compost-making was a way of nurturing the soil, plants, and life all around us? Through these questions, and many rounds of conversations and laughter, the story was slowly shaped into existence. As first time authors, going down to the programmes offered by AFCC was also immensely helpful for us to understand how to communicate climate action to young readers as well. Since then, we’ve brought the story to many places through storytelling sessions and workshops, and it is surreal that we now get to bring it back to the very place that has helped to shape it too!

Come down the National Library, B1, Central Public Library at the Submarine room on 21st May (Thursday) 2-2.30pm for our book launch!
