NParks

NParks We are dedicated to transforming Singapore into a City in Nature. We also work closely with the community to enhance the quality of our living environment.

The National Parks Board (NParks) is responsible for enhancing and managing the urban ecosystems of our City in Nature. We are the lead agency for greenery, biodiversity conservation, and wildlife and animal health, welfare and management. NParks manages parks, nature reserves, the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Pulau Ubin and the Sisters' Islands Marine Park. Adding to this is the extensive network o

f Nature Ways, and Park Connector Network that links major parks, nature areas and residential estates island-wide. NParks also manages millions of trees, including those along roads and in our parks, gardens and state land. NParks has developed an urban biodiversity conservation model, which aims to conserve representative ecosystems in land-scarce Singapore. NParks also monitors and coordinates measures to enhance the presence of biodiversity in our urban landscape. The Animal & Veterinary Service, a cluster within NParks, is the main touch-point for animal-related issues, as well as the first responder for animal-related feedback. By improving the standards of the animal and veterinary sectors, we aim to safeguard animal health and welfare in Singapore. NParks is working closely with partners in the landscape, horticulture, veterinary and animal sectors to increase productivity, and provide training for all levels of the workforce. Enhancing competencies of the industry will support Singapore’s vision of being a City in Nature. For more information, visit www.nparks.gov.sg

💡Fun Fact Friday💡

Native to Singapore, the Leban (Vitex pinnata) may not be the flashiest tree, but its fragrant flowers and fleshy fruits make it a wildlife favourite.

Its white and pale violet flower clusters attract pollinators, while its shiny purplish-black fruits feed local birds.

The name “pinnata” is Latin for "feather-like", referring to the arrangement of its leaflets, which resemble the structure of a feather.

Hovering above the flowers is a very special visitor: the Broad-handed Carpenter Bee (Xylocopa latipes)!

Known as a "gentle giant", this massive native bee is entirely black with shiny, metallic wings.

🔦Singapore Species Spotlight🔦

Did you know that Singapore is home to 64 native species of snakes?

As key players in the food web, snakes prey on small animals and curb local rodent populations, while also being a food source for larger mammals and birds.

These cold-blooded creatures rely on warmth from their surroundings to regulate their body temperature.

With Singapore’s tropical climate, snakes can hunt, breed and remain active all year round!

🔎Same Same but Different🔍

Two of Singapore's most eye-catching magenta flowers prove that appearances can be deceiving, even within the same plant family.

The Spanish Shawl (Heterotis rotundifolia) is a low-growing, trailing groundcover native to tropical Africa.

Its vivid magenta-pink flowers and spreading habit make it a favourite for slopes, hanging baskets, and pathway borders islandwide.

On the other hand, the Common Sendudok (Melastoma malabathricum) is a native flowering shrub with five-petaled magenta blooms and distinctive curled anthers.

If you spotted these flowers while out and about, would you be able to tell them apart?
