Today marks the 81st anniversary of Japan’s announcement of its unconditional surrender in WWII. That victory, won at the cost of countless lives and immense bloodshed, laid the foundation for the postwar international order. Remembering this history is not about perpetuating hatred, but about remembering the suffering brought by war and cherishing the hard-won peace we have today.

May we learn from history, oppose war and aggression, and work together to safeguard peace.
