The Embassy of Switzerland in Singapore issues the following statement, together with the Delegation of the European Union, the diplomatic missions of the EU Member States and the diplomatic missions of Norway and the United Kingdom in Singapore:

Following the ex*****on of a 35-year-old Singaporean citizen on 23 July 2026, the EU Delegation and the diplomatic missions of the EU Member States, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom reiterate our strong opposition to the use of capital punishment in all cases and in all circumstances.

This is the fifteenth ex*****on carried out in Singapore this year.

The death penalty is incompatible with the inalienable right to life and the absolute prohibition of cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment. Furthermore, it is a definitive punishment that makes possible miscarriages of justice irreversible.

International human rights law restricts the use of capital punishment to the most serious crimes, understood as crimes of extreme gravity involving intentional killing. Resorting to the death penalty to prevent drug production and trafficking does not meet this threshold. There is no conclusive evidence that the death penalty contributes to curbing or preventing drug trafficking more than other types of punishment.

We will continue to work for the abolition of the death penalty in the few countries that still apply it. We call for Singapore to adopt a moratorium on all ex*****ons as a first step towards its full abolition, in line with the trend in the Southeast Asian region and worldwide.

ETH Zürich: Switzerland's federal tech school in Zurich 🇨🇭

Founded in 1855, ETH Zurich was created to train the engineers, architects and scientists needed to help build modern Switzerland. That public mission continues today through research, education and innovation. 🔬

The institution brings together around 26,900 students from approximately 130 countries, including more than 4,000 doctoral students. Its scientific community is also linked to some of history's most influential researchers, including Albert Einstein. 🧑‍🔬

Beyond education and research, ETH Zurich plays an important role in Switzerland's innovation ecosystem. In 2024 alone, 37 new spin-offs emerged from the institution, illustrating how public research can lead to practical solutions for society and industry.

That impact reaches Singapore too. Through the Singapore-ETH Centre (SEC), ETH Zurich and Singapore's research ecosystem have been collaborating on solutions to some of the world's most pressing urban and sustainability challenges. 🇨🇭🤝🇸🇬

The Swiss places that really inspired Tolkien.

In 1911, J.R.R. Tolkien travelled through the Swiss Alps, an experience that would later echo through The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

🏔️ Lauterbrunnen Valley
Its steep cliffs, waterfalls and hidden-valley atmosphere are widely associated with Rivendell. Tolkien also wrote that his Swiss journey inspired the scene in which Bilbo leaves Rivendell to cross the Misty Mountains.

❄️ Silberhorn
Tolkien explicitly described this Bernese peak as “the Celebdil of my dreams.” In Middle-earth, Celebdil is the mountain where Gandalf’s battle with the Balrog reaches its climax.

🧊 Aletsch Glacier
Tolkien later recalled a rockfall near the glacier and a stormy night during which his group became lost. These memories are often linked to the dramatic “Thunder Battle” scene in The Hobbit.

Cheese and tofu waste isn't just waste anymore. It could help remove CO₂ from the atmosphere.🧀

Researchers at ETH Zurich developed a carbon capture method that transforms protein waste from dairy and tofu production into tiny porous beads. These beads absorb up to 97 mg of CO₂ per gram, 10 to 50% more than current commercial materials. Instead of relying on high heat, the process releases the captured CO₂ using a mild acid and base spray at room temperature. The beads can be reused many times and, at the end of their life, composted or converted into biofuel.

What makes this particularly exciting is the circularity of it all: food industry by-products becoming climate solutions, with virtually no waste left behind. It's a reminder that some of the most powerful answers to our biggest challenges may already be next to us. 🌱

You know the Moon landing. You probably do not know Switzerland helped film parts of it. 🌕🇨🇭

On 21 July 1969, Central European Time, Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission. Switzerland also played a lesser-known role in this historic achievement.

Lenses manufactured by Kern & Co. AG in Aarau were fitted to Maurer 16 mm cameras used during the mission. One camera recorded the descent of the Eagle lunar module, while another captured colour footage of the landing and the astronauts’ activities on the lunar surface.

Neil Armstrong later kept one of the cameras in his personal collection for more than 40 years. It was rediscovered by his widow Carol in 2015 and is now preserved at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.

Switzerland also contributed to Apollo 11 science. Professor Johannes Geiss and his team at the University of Bern developed the Solar Wind Composition Experiment, an aluminium foil collector designed to capture particles from the solar wind. Buzz Aldrin deployed it on the Moon during the mission.

In May 2025, the village of Blatten in the Swiss Alps was devastated after part of the Birch Glacier collapsed above it.

Most of the village was destroyed. Yet residents and tourists had already been evacuated after warning signs were detected.

How was Switzerland able to act in time? 🇨🇭

The answer lies in a prevention system built over many years.

Across the country, trained observers monitor mountain slopes and report any unusual changes. Above Blatten, new cracks and increasing rock activity alerted the cantonal authorities, allowing a response plan to be put in place.

Human expertise is combined with technology. Satellites, GPS measurements and ground sensors help scientists monitor mountain stability, while researchers at ETH Zürich and the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research have developed a 3D simulation tool to better understand how rock, snow and ice avalanches behave in complex Alpine terrain.

Prevention goes beyond monitoring. Switzerland also relies on hazard maps, protective infrastructure such as avalanche barriers and retention dams, and detailed evacuation plans to reduce the impact of natural hazards.

The work continues. Following Blatten, Switzerland is expanding mountain-risk research through new initiatives, including a dedicated chair at the University of Geneva, improved satellite analysis by WSL and the future Swiss GeoLab, which will develop advanced Earth observation tools to strengthen natural hazard warning systems.

Preparing for disasters may never make the headlines, but it can make all the difference when every minute counts.
