EnvisioningHealth newsletter: https://for.sg/envisioninghealth The National University Hospital (NUH) is Singapore’s leading university hospital. While the hospital at Kent Ridge first received its patients on 24 June 1985, our legacy started from 1905, the date of the founding of what is today the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Our unique identity as a unive

rsity hospital is a key attraction for healthcare professionals who aspire to do more than practise tertiary medical care. We offer an environment where research and teaching are an integral part of medicine, and continue to shape medicine and transform care for the community we care for. We are an academic medical centre with over 1,200 beds, serving more than one million patients a year with over 50 medical, surgical and dental specialties. NUH is the only public and not-for-profit hospital in Singapore to provide trusted care for adults, women and children under one roof, including the only paediatric kidney and liver transplant programme in the country. The NUH is a key member of the National University Health System (NUHS), one of three public healthcare clusters in Singapore. Visit our website at www.nuh.com.sg.

Moving from discussion to action in healthcare transformation

Healthcare systems are under increasing pressure, from rising demand to workforce constraints and growing complexity of care.

Last week, we hosted Prof Eyal Zimlichman, MD, Prof Gregory KATZ and Prof Sally Lewis for an executive workshop on AI, outcomes, patient experience and system value.

Over the one and a half days, the discussions focused on the areas that matter most - how care is delivered, how decisions are made, and what needs to change as we move forward.

Here's what stood out:
🔹 Use AI and data more deliberately in everyday clinical decisions
🔹Make outcomes more visible to drive improvement
🔹 Sustainable transformation rests on four pillars: transparency, clinical leadership, incentives, and stewardship.
🔹 Look at value across the full patient journey, beyond the hospital

The feedback:
NUH is already operating at a high level. Yet, in this environment, that is not enough on its own.

The work now is to simplify how we operate, redesign pathways and use data more deliberately.

This will require choices and pace.

Thanks to Prof Zimlichman, Prof Katz and Prof Lewis for the clarity and candour during the time with us 💙

Many women go through menopause quietly, thinking it’s something they simply have to endure – but it doesn’t have to be this way.

If you’ve been experiencing symptoms that affect your sleep, energy, or daily life, don’t ignore them.

With the right support, many women experience real improvement in their symptoms and how they feel.

Under the home biologics programme, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) treatment can be brought directly to patients' homes.

One of the key initiatives of the National University Centre for Digestive Health, the programme administers infusion medication to patients safely and conveniently in the comforts of their own home, and helps to free up hospital beds.

Hear more from our Advanced Practice Nurse Shu Kuan on how the programme works, and what it means for patients living with IBD.

At 16, Danish was diagnosed with lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. His father, Irfan made him a promise: "You are not going through this alone."
Danish started chemotherapy but had a relapse. His medical team, led by Prof Allen Yeoh, sought special ethics board approval to try CAR T-cell therapy, which is usually carried out only in adults, with a 30% success rate in relapsed lymphoma cases. It is an immunotherapy where a patient’s cells are genetically engineered to fight cancer cells. Danish responded well to the treatment and returned to school within six months.

Determined to catch up, Danish took on extra modules and graduated from polytechnic half a year earlier. He even received offers from four local universities!

41 years of incredible care. And every day, we choose to do better.

In June 1985, NUH opened its doors at Kent Ridge with a promise: to care, to teach, and to advance medicine. That promise has guided us through every chapter - and continues to remind us why we must keep improving for our patients, our people and Singapore.

From caring for the world’s smallest surviving baby, to performing Singapore’s first adult and child liver transplants, to embracing AI, robotics and new models of care - every milestone has been made possible by people who believed we could do better.

Behind the technology, systems and breakthroughs are colleagues who show up every day with skill, care and quiet commitment.

The surgeon who has performed thousands of life-changing operations. The nurse delivering skilled and compassionate care at the bedside. The pharmacist preparing medications with precision. The housekeeper keeping wards clean and safe. The bed management team helping patients get the care space they need sooner.

This is what incredible care looks like at NUH: many hands, one purpose.

As we mark this milestone, we celebrate not just our hospital’s story, but the people who write it every day - and the next chapter we will shape together. 🎂

Watch our new corporate video in full (for.sg/made-in-nuh) to see our everyday purpose in action: responding as one team when it matters most, and making every action count for safe, timely and compassionate care.

99% of us carry genetic variations that shape our health. For example, which medicines work for us, which diseases we’re prone to, and what we pass on to our children.

Here in the lab, Dr Desirée du Sart decodes a patient’s genetic profile to pinpoint the variants behind their condition. In the clinic, Dr Elaine Lo uses a patient’s profile to match them to the right medicine at the right dose, catching problems before they happen. And linking lab to clinic is NUGEM, the newly launched National University Centre for Genomic Medicine.
