Viet Nam has brought cases to historic lows, with 26 of its 34 provinces now certified malaria-free. Yet sustaining progress through the final mile presents a new challenge. As international funding declines and responsibilities shift to provincial and commune levels, ensuring sustainable domestic is becoming more critical than ever, especially as elimination comes within reach.

Recognising the urgency, APLMA and PATH recently partnered with Vietnam's National Institute of Malariology, Parasitology and Entomology (NIMPE) to launch a pilot to build the framework and capacity that local governments need to keep investing in malaria elimination, resulting in the development of a Planning and Costing Framework for Malaria Prevention and Elimination built specifically around 's new administrative reality.

World Mosquito Day offers a timely moment to spotlight an urgent reality: malaria in Asia Pacific remains a significant but highly uneven public health challenge.

To mark the occasion, APLMA collaborated with the Outreach Network for Gene Drive Research on a new article authored by Dr. Sarthak Das, CEO of APLMA. The piece highlights how progress towards elimination continues across the region, yet fragile settings face rising risks from conflict, displacement, climate shocks, mobility and health system disruption.

The message is clear – elimination is possible, but progress must be protected. Ending malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases will require sustained political commitment, financing, surveillance, innovation and community-level services that reach those still at risk.

This World Mosquito Day, The Better World I See takes us to Stung Treng Province, – where Mansay, a village malaria worker from remote Ban Houy village, has spent more than a decade protecting his community from malaria.

Crossing rivers and rugged terrain, Mansay brings vital health services to communities that might otherwise be left behind.

After years of hard work and daily vigilance, malaria in his village began tapering off by 2024. By 2025, there were no known cases – a hopeful sign on Cambodia’s path towards malaria-free certification.

World Mosquito Day reminds us that ending malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases depend not only on tools and targets, but on people like Mansay.

The better world we see is one where no community is left behind – and malaria elimination becomes a reality.

World Mosquito Day marked a turning point for . For communities where malaria continues to affect daily life, livelihoods and futures, the launch of the National Roadmap for Malaria Elimination 2026–2040 signals more than a plan – it is a national promise.

Launched by His Excellency Prime Minister Matthew Wale, the roadmap sets a clear path to end malaria by 2038 and achieve WHO certification by 2040. “Today’s launch is a defining step towards a malaria-free Solomon Islands,” said H.E. Prime Minister Wale. “Now, we must turn commitment into action – so every community, every family, and every child can share in a malaria-free future.”

World Mosquito Day reminds us that ending malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases are possible when leadership, investment and communities move together.

As the region advances towards elimination, zoonotic malaria has emerged as a growing concern, particularly in Southeast Asia. While P. knowlesi remains the predominant zoonotic malaria threat, growing evidence suggests that other simian Plasmodium species, such as P. cynomolgi and P. inui, may warrant greater attention amid increasing land use changes that drive zoonotic malaria transmission. Existing challenges in surveillance and diagnostics raise important questions about the true burden of zoonotic malaria and the ability of health systems to detect emerging threats effectively.

As advances its malaria elimination efforts, the challenge is no longer solely about reaching zero cases, but also about ensuring that essential malaria services are accessible to everyone at risk.

For persons with disabilities, barriers related to accessibility, communication, transportation, and social inclusion can limit reach to essential services. Recognising this gap, APLMA and PNG's National Malaria Control Programme undertook a joint initiative project across four districts in Central Province to better understand the experiences of Papua New Guineans living with disabilities in accessing malaria services. The findings provide important evidence to inform more equitable malaria service delivery and support the systematic integration of inclusion into national malaria policies and programmes, particularly as PNG begins implementing its National Strategic Plan for Malaria 2026–2030. Reaffirming ’s resolve, Honorable Minister Thet conveyed the country’s steadfast commitment to achieving the shared regional goal of malaria elimination by 2030, emphasizing the need for strengthened national ownership, more targeted implementation, and sustained alignment, particularly across the .

Malaria elimination is a shared regional responsibility, according to Dr. Yong Zhang, Deputy Administrator of China’s National Disease Control and Prevention Administration, at the 10th Asia Pacific Leaders’ Summit on Malaria Elimination.

Dr. Zhang reaffirms 's commitment to working alongside countries and partners to ensure malaria elimination is achieved in the . He highlighted the importance of sustained political commitment, close cross-border collaboration, and long-term support from key partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and The Global Fund.

These collective efforts, he said, will be essential to accelerating progress, strengthening regional solidarity, and ensuring that the goal of elimination is not only achieved, but sustained for future generations to come.

The recent 10ᵗʰ Asia Pacific Leaders’ Summit on Malaria Elimination put a spotlight on how closing the gap to elimination will hinge greatly on countries translating commitment into coordinated action particularly in the context of sustainability and transition. The Summit placed a strong focus on the Greater Mekong Subregion as the region embarks on the final mile.

As the Summit brought malaria leaders together to review gains, share lessons, and sharpen strategies for the way forward, discussions underscored that sustaining momentum will require strengthened domestic financing, continued political commitment, and keeping malaria high on the national agenda until elimination is achieved – all essential to securing a malaria-free future.

Papua New Guinea is seeing a malaria resurgence: Coastal and lowland provinces have contributed significantly to the nation’s burden. Earlier gains between 2006 and 2013 have seen marked progress, however, funding constraints, declining intervention effectiveness, depletion of commodities and weakened community engagement have since dramatically reversed hard-won progress.

By 2024, cases surged to over 910,000, accounting for much of the malaria burden in Asia Pacific. In response, is pursuing bolder and more coordinated efforts, from the Joint Action Plan with Indonesia, the recent launch of the Governors Ending Malaria (GEM) Coalition, as well as a new decentralised approach outlined in the latest National Strategic Plan for 2026–2030.
