Returning to his childhood neighbourhood in Clementi to volunteer allows him to listen, help, and give back to the community that shaped him.

I spent part of my childhood growing up in Clementi before moving away, and returned in 2014 to make Clementi home again. Volunteering here therefore holds a special meaning for me. It gives me the opportunity to listen to residents’ concerns, help where I can, and give back to a community that has been part of my own journey.

Through our block visits, I have learnt that even simple acts can make a difference, whether it is keeping residents informed about initiatives such as CDC vouchers and Haircut with Love, or reminding our elderly residents to stay hydrated during hot weather. Their appreciation makes these interactions especially meaningful and has strengthened my own sense of belonging to the community I grew up in and now call home again.

Driven by empathy and gratitude, Doreen hopes to support residents through providing a listening ear and reminding them that they are not alone.

Joining MPS has given me an opportunity to pay it forward. Going through a challenging journey in 2024 made me realise just how important it is to have the right people at the right time to help us through some of life’s toughest moments. Today, I hope to be that person for someone else.

I used to think that making a difference required doing something extraordinary. Today, I realise that it can be as simple as giving someone your time, listening to their concerns, helping them find a way forward, or simply letting them know, “Someone cares, and you are not alone.”

For every resident, I hope to offer not just assistance, but a listening ear, encouragement, and reassurance that they do not have to face their challenges alone.

My volunteering journey has made me more empathetic, more grounded and more grateful.

If I can be that right person, at the right time, for even one person, then I believe I am paying forward the kindness and support that helped me through my own difficult journey.

This is my MPS why.
