The European Left Youth Network calls for solidarity with the Jin, Jiyan, AzadĆ® (Woman, Life, Freedom) movement of Iran a year from the death of 22-year-old Jina Mahsa Amini. Amini was arrested and beaten by the Iranian morality police in September 2022 and later died from her wounds in their custody.
The history of women's resistance in Iran dates back at least a century. The Womenās March of 1979, Homa Darabi's self-sacrifice in 1994, the One Million Signatures campaign launched in 2006, White Wednesday's campaign in 2010 and Girls of Enghelab Street are examples of the womenās resistance since the Iranian revolution.
Jina Mahsa Aminiās death was the last straw after decades of womenās suppression. Her funeral in Saqqez, Kurdistan was met with women taking off their scarves and waving them in the air shouting āJin, Jiyan, AzadĆ®ā (Woman, Life, Freedom).
Demonstrators took over the country in demand of justice, and continued for more than three months, during which time hundreds of people were shot dead and blinded by rubber bullets, and 19,000 demonstrators were arrested.
The Woman, Life, Freedom movement has united Iranian people of all social classes as they stand together against the regime and its discriminatory laws. In an effort to stop the movement from spreading the government has tightened its restrictions, including increasing street patrols and banning public demonstrations.
The struggle of Iranian people against their autocratic regime continues a year from the death of Amini. People are taking part in civil disobedience by speaking out against the government. The number of people taking part in this unprecedented popular uprising is growing day by day as the fear of the regime dissipates.
The European Left Youth Network stands in solidarity and supports the fight for freedom of the people of Iran and the global protests of the Jin, Jiyan, AzadĆ® movement.
