👀 What is happening behind closed doors? 👀

🧩In Bratislava and Vienna, things are happening that may not yet be visible at first glance. Historic spaces are being given a new life and with it comes the question of what they can offer people in the future.

🇸🇰 In Bratislava, work is already underway on Beblavého Street.
👉The future branch of the Bratislava City Museum is gradually taking shape. But the renovation is about more than construction work. Dozens of expert consultations are helping to determine how the historic building can be restored with sensitivity, bringing together architects, designers, heritage experts and craftspeople.
And young people aged 16–24 can also become part of creating the new museum. 🗣️
This autumn, a series of discussions will continue, giving you a behind-the-scenes look at the preparation of the museum, the chance to meet architects and researchers, and an opportunity to share what you would like to see in the new museum.

🇦🇹 In Vienna, the focus is on finding a new life for a bunker.
The air-raid bunker in Schönbornpark is set to become a multifunctional public space. Before the renovation begins, it was opened to the public so that people could take a look inside and share their ideas about what this unusual space could become.
The suggestions were truly diverse - from a memorial site, table tennis or an indoor play area to a place for relaxation, digital detox or somewhere to cool down on hot summer days. 💡
Turning Points is therefore not only about restoring historic spaces. It is also about the people who help shape the stories these places will tell in the future.

🏰 What was hidden behind the walls of Malacky Manor House? 😱

During the restoration of the Pálffy Manor House in Malacky, restorers discovered an original historic altar hidden behind a later structural modification.

Paradoxically, being sealed behind the wall may have helped preserve it. The altar escaped subsequent alterations to the building and experts can now begin the process of restoring it and returning it to its original appearance.

✨ One discovery that shows just how many stories our shared cultural heritage can still reveal.

The restoration of Malacky Manor House is part of the Royal Traces - European royal houses and sovereigns project, co-financed by the Interreg Slovakia - Austria Programme. The project connects places associated with the history of noble families and is developing a cross-border cultural route to bring this heritage closer to visitors in Slovakia and Austria.

Ako môžu múzeá posilňovať demokraciu v časoch spoločenského napätia?

V Múzeu mesta Bratislavy sme privítali študentky a študentov európskej etnológie z rôznych rakúskych univerzít. Ich návšteva bola súčasťou Museum Campu, ktorý organizuje Volkskundemuseum Wien. Program je určený budúcim profesionálom a profesionálkam v oblasti múzejníctva a ponúka im možnosť spoznať fungovanie múzeí priamo v praxi a preskúmať rôzne spôsoby, akými múzeá ovplyvňujú svoje komunity.

Počas programu študenti a študentky skúmali meniacu sa úlohu múzeí v súčasnej spoločnosti so zameraním na sprístupňovanie kultúry, historickú pamäť a prepájanie osobných príbehov s tvorbou výstav.

V Bratislave sa oboznámili s projektom Turning Points – Museums for a Democratic Future, spoločným medzinárodným projektom Múzea mesta Bratislavy a Volkskundemuseum Wien, ktorý získal podporu v rámci programu Interreg SK–AT. Spoločne sme sa zamýšľali nad tým, ako môžu múzeá spolupracovať v politicky a spoločensky náročných obdobiach, ktoré zlomové momenty formovali našu súčasnosť a ako môžu kultúrne inštitúcie tieto súvislosti reflektovať vo svojej práci.

Návštevu sprevádzala Nina de Gelder, ktorá má v Múzeu mesta Bratislavy na starosti medzinárodnú spoluprácu a koordinuje projekt Turning Points.

Teší nás, že Bratislava bola jednou z destinácií programu.

Ďakujeme Volkskundemuseum Wien a všetkým študentkám a študentom za návštevu, podnetné otázky a inšpiratívnu diskusiu.
