From doom loop to regional restart: Martin Kahanec in eubrief.sk on the demographic crisis of Slovak regions

🇸🇰 Slovenská verzia nižšie ⬇️

A new demographic report from the European Commission places four Slovak regions — Žilina, Banská Bystrica, Prešov, and Košice — among the EU areas at highest risk of talent drain.

Brussels is responding with a new strategy called the Right to Stay, which will determine the resources and tools available to the most affected regions. The topic is covered in a new article by Lucia Lauková for eubrief.sk.

The article also draws on statements by CELSI Scientific Director Martin Kahanec, who describes demography as a question that directly determines competitiveness, prosperity, and democracy.

He points to the so-called doom loop — a weaker regional economy drives outmigration of young people, which accelerates ageing and depopulation, reduces demand for skilled labour, and makes both business and public services harder to sustain.

Regional decline is not inevitable, however. Kahanec presents a regional restart as an alternative — a combination of a good business environment, decent jobs, affordable housing, quality schools, and strong local services.

Od špirály skazy k regionálnemu reštartu: Martin Kahanec v článku eubrief.sk o demografickej kríze slovenských regiónov

Nová demografická správa Európskej komisie radí štyri slovenské kraje — Žilinský, Banskobystrický, Prešovský a Košický — medzi regióny EÚ s najvyšším rizikom straty mladých ľudí.

Ako alternatívu predstavuje regionálny reštart, teda kombináciu dobrého podnikateľského prostredia, dôstojných pracovných miest, dostupného bývania, kvalitných škôl a silných miestnych služieb.

Green investments without social guarantees are not enough: Patrik Gažo for TASR on the reform of the EU emissions trading system

🇸🇰 Slovenská verzia ⬇️

Does the proposed reform of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) have a real chance of accelerating the decarbonisation of European industry, and under what conditions?

This is the question at the centre of a Teraz.sk news, in which CELSI researcher and Institute of Sociology, Slovak Academy of Sciences (Slovenská akadémia vied) researcher Patrik Gažo shared his views.

Gažo sees the conditioning of free allowances on green investments as a sensible step. At the same time, he warns that public support for decarbonisation must be tied not only to green investments, but also to social guarantees. Without them, technological modernisation may proceed — but its social costs will be passed on to residents and workers, fuelling further social, economic, and political instability.

Patrik Gažo researches the decarbonisation of Slovak industry also within the EcoMobility Transition project, supported by EUKI - European Climate Initiative, led by CELSI in cooperation with the European Trade Union Institute - ETUI, NELA. Next Economy Lab, and Instytut Spraw Publicznych. The project examines fair and sustainable transition in Central and Eastern European regions where the automotive industry plays a key role.

Next Economy Lab a Instytut Spraw Publicznych. Projekt skúma spravodlivú a udržateľnú transformáciu v regiónoch strednej a východnej Európy, kde zohráva kľúčovú úlohu automobilový priemysel.

Brain drain is not inevitable. The future of regions depends on the choices we make today

What makes young people stay, leave, or return? A newly published article by Nadácia Pontis explores this question through insights from labour economist and CELSI Scientific Director Prof. Martin Kahanec, together with other speakers from the discussion How Not to Lose a (Young) Generation.

Drawing on demographic and labour market evidence, Martin Kahanec argues that the challenges facing many Slovak regions go far beyond migration alone. By 2050, population decline is expected in two thirds of EU regions, with eastern and less developed regions among the most affected.

Yet, he also stresses that decline is not predetermined. Regions can build their future by creating opportunities, strengthening trust, giving young people a voice, and offering a credible vision they can identify with.

The article is based on a discussion organised by Nadácia Pontis as part of the Impact Summit programme, in cooperation with The Spot and Future Founders.

Alongside Martin Kahanec, the discussion featured Martina Kolesárová, CEO of Nadácia Pontis, and Boris Podolak, CEO of The Spot, while young participants from the Impact Summit and Future Founders programmes shared their own perspectives on building a future in Slovakia.

Martina Kahanca a ďalších hostí diskusie Ako nestratiť (mladú) generáciu.

Martin Kahanec vo svojich vystúpeniach dlhodobo upozorňuje, že výzvy slovenských regiónov nesúvisia len s migráciou. Podľa prognóz bude do roku 2050 čeliť poklesu počtu obyvateľov až dve tretiny regiónov Európskej únie, pričom najviac budú zasiahnuté menej rozvinuté regióny vrátane častí Slovenska.

Článok vychádza z diskusného večera, ktorý pripravila Nadácia Pontis v rámci programu Impact Summit v spolupráci s The Spot a Future Founders.

Spolu s Martinom Kahancom v diskusii vystúpili Martina Kolesárová, výkonná riaditeľka Nadácia Pontis, a Boris Podolak, CEO The Spot.

Democracy, critical pedagogy, and trade union training: CELSI at the COMPASS seminar in Brussels

🇸🇰 Slovenská verzia nižšie ⬇️

The international seminar of the COMPASS project, held on 29–30 June 2026 in Brussels, brought together trade unions and research institutes from Belgium, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Spain around a shared concern: how to strengthen the political awareness and democratic skills of union representatives using the tools of critical pedagogy.

On the first day, participating organisations presented posters on their countries and existing approaches to training trade union officials in democratic values and practices.

The second day featured lectures and discussions by two experts in critical pedagogy, exploring applied critical and practical knowledge with trade union representatives and researchers.

CELSI supported the Hungarian trade union SZEF (Szakszervezetek Együttműködési Fóruma) in this project and was represented at the seminar by Senior Researcher Tibor T. Meszmann.

The COMPASS project aims to raise awareness among trade unions and their representatives about the importance of democratic principles, rights, and values — fostering pro-democratic attitudes and encouraging active participation in governance.

Set against a backdrop of democratic backsliding and growing pressure on labour rights across Europe, it focuses on knowledge-sharing, capacity building, and the development of novel training materials grounded in critical pedagogy.

The project is co-funded by the European Union, project no. 101250703.

Partners include KU Leuven, ACV Puls and De Vormers (Belgium), ISSI, FNZ, and ISTURET (Bulgaria), SZEF (Hungary), and Fundación 1 Mayo (Spain).

Demokracia, kritická pedagogika a odborárske vzdelávanie: CELSI na seminári projektu COMPASS v Brusel

Medzinárodný seminár projektu COMPASS, ktorý sa konal 29. a 30. júna 2026 v Bruseli, spojil odborové organizácie a výskumné inštitúty z Belgicka, Bulharska, Maďarska a Španielska okolo spoločnej témy: ako posilniť politické povedomie a demokratické zručnosti odborových predstaviteľov pomocou nástrojov kritickej pedagogiky.

V prvý deň zúčastnené organizácie prezentovali plagáty o svojich krajinách a existujúcich prístupoch k vzdelávaniu odborových funkcionárov v oblasti demokratických hodnôt a praktík.

Druhý deň patril prednáškam a diskusiám dvoch expertov v oblasti kritickej pedagogiky, ktorí s odborovými predstaviteľmi a výskumníkmi skúmali aplikované kritické a praktické poznatky.

Partnermi sú KU Leuven, ACV Puls a De Vormers vzw (Belgicko), ISSI, FNZ a ISTURET (Bulharsko), SZEF (Maďarsko) a Fundación 1º de Mayo (Španielsko).

Optimism is not naivety - it takes courage: Martin Kahanec discussed the future of the Gemer region in Betliar

🇸🇰 Slovenská verzia nižšie ⬇️

After several previous discussions on the Gemer region, CELSI Scientific Director Martin Kahanec joined Martina Štepán and Marián Porvažník on 27 June 2026 in Betliar for an informal debate chaired by Eva Kocanová on the prospects for the Gemer region and the importance of believing in its positive future.

The conversation centred on questions that have run through the entire series: whether Gemer can become a place of opportunity, why optimism is not naivety but courage, and whether the future is shaped more by decisions than by circumstances.

Kahanec, a labour economist and native of Rožňava, again stressed that genuine regional renewal rests not only on investment and projects, but on trust, strong institutions, and people's willingness to actively shape the future of their region.

CELSI at ESEE 2026 | Monika Martišková and Jakub Barszcz presented DEEPLAB research at the European Society for Ecological Economics conference in Ghent

🇸🇰 Slovenská verzia nižšie ⬇️

The 16th Conference of the European Society for Ecological Economics (ESEE 2026), held from 30 June to 3 July 2026 at Ghent University/Universiteit Gent, Belgium, connected over 500 ecological economists and sustainability scholars from across Europe for four days of transdisciplinary debate on sustainable and inclusive well-being.

With more than 400 presentations across 13 parallel tracks, topics ranged from rethinking prosperity beyond GDP and ecological boundaries, to socio-ecological transformation, the future of work, and institutional innovation.

CELSI Senior Researcher Monika Martišková and Researcher Jakub Barszcz both attended and presented their paper "Energy Transition and Employment Outcomes: Comparing Nuclear Lock-In with Deep Decarbonisation Pathways".

Using a multi-regional input-output model, the paper compares the labour market implications of continued nuclear energy policy with a scenario based on 100% renewable energy.

📌 The DEEPLAB project focuses on the economic consequences of decarbonisation and its labour market impacts, particularly in hard-to-abate sectors and their value chains in Slovakia. It is supported by the European Union – NextGenerationEU through the Recovery and Resilience Plan of the Slovak Republic.
