Shaping NATO Standards

The NATO EOD COE which acts as a custodian for NATO EOD capstone doctrine hosted the AJP-3.18 Data fusion workshop. Experts from ACT, EOD COE, , DEU, NOR and SWE provided their expertise to form new structure, preface, linkages and adjudicated 224 comments provided by the NATO nations and NATO bodies. As this might seems as tedious process, it wasn’t. Quite the opposite. Comments that were provided formed a baseline for valuable discussions and inputs for the next development of AJP-3.18. We as the NATO EOD COE would like to express our thanks to all participants and people from the COE that helped to host this event.
See you at the 1st AJP-3.18 writing session.

Completed delivery of the 02-26 NATO EOD Staff Officer Training

From 20 APR to 30 APR 2026, the NATO Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Staff Officer Training Course was successfully held in Wroclaw, Poland. The course was conducted under the auspices of the NATO EOD Centre of Excellence as part of its official Programme of Work, addressing current operational demands.
The training was delivered by the Education and Training Department in cooperation with the Transformation Support Department and was specifically adapted to meet the needs of NATO multinational participants. In total, 18 participants from 13 nations attended the course, all of whom successfully met the training objectives and graduated.
The course is designed to prepare non-EOD-qualified staff officers by providing them with a fundamental level of professional competence in line with NATO standards, while also integrating relevant United Nations principles related to explosive ordnance threat mitigation. Upon completion, graduates are capable of planning, preparing, commanding, controlling, and coordinating EOD operations within multinational battalion - and brigade - level command structures.

From 18-20 March 2026, the ETACS project team in cooperation with 905th Centre of Specialized Combat Support in Nováky and Slovak Armed Forces Academy of General Milan Rastislav Štefánik conducted a testing of the ETACS system in the settings of a real EOD course. In order to understand how useful the ETACS application really is in practice, we set up a simple comparison between traditional teaching and VR-based learning. During this event there were present also members of the development team from 4Experience – Polish VR company responsible for the software development of the ETACS project.

On day one, participants were introduced to the VR system in order to get familiar with controls and movement, followed by a lecture on basic EOD equipment and procedures used by operators. On the second day, participants were split into two groups. One group learned through a standard PowerPoint lesson, while the other used the VR application. Afterwards, both groups carried out a simulated EOD task on training dummies to apply what they had learned. The aim was to directly observe differences in behavior, understanding, and performance.
Throughout the sessions, researchers closely observed how participants interacted with both methods. They also collected detailed feedback through surveys to capture user experience and reactions.

The testing clearly showed that VR has strong potential as a training tool. Overall feedback was positive, with high satisfaction and engagement, although some participants struggled initially with controls or experienced minor discomfort.

Celebrating 15 Years of Excellence! 🎖️

Today, we commemorate the 15th anniversary of the NATO EOD COE’s accreditation, honoring a journey of professionalism and dedication to our shared mission. Over the past fifteen years, our Center has evolved into a respected pillar of expertise within the Alliance, a success driven primarily by the hard work of our people. To commemorate this milestone, COL František MIHALOVIČ, the NATO EOD COE director, presented commemorative medals to the commanders of units within the Trenčín garrison, expressing deep gratitude for their long-standing cooperation. We are honored to build a Center that remains a source of pride for both NATO and the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic. We would like to thank everyone for their support and cooperation. We look forward to many more years of continued success and international impact!

Combined Annual Discipline Conference

From 24 MAR to 26 MAR 2026, the Military Engineering Centre of Excellence (MILENG CoE) hosted the Combined Annual Discipline Conference (CADC) in Ingolstadt, Germany. The event brought together three NATO disciplines to discuss Education and Training (E&T) solutions for capability gaps identified by SHAPE and the Requirements Authority (RA). LTC Alexander Hugyar, PhD, and 1LT Erik Kosar attended on behalf of the NATO EOD COE, sharing their expertise in Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) with the MILENG and Counter-IED (C-IED) groups.
The CADC was especially important because it included updates to the Course Control Documents (CCDs), which are in effect from 26 MAR 2026 to 26 MAR 2029. More details about the CADC are accessible via the following link: https://www.eodcoe.org/en/news/combined-annual-discipline-conference.html

President of the Slovak Republic Visits the NATO EOD Centre of Excellence

The NATO Explosive Ordnance Disposal Centre of Excellence (NATO EOD COE) was honoured to host a distinguished guest, the President of the Slovak Republic, Peter Pellegrini. Upon arrival, the President was formally welcomed by Major General Ivan Balog, the Land Forces Commander and the Commander of Trenčin Garrison, alongside Colonel František Mihalovič, Director of the NATO EOD COE. The official program commenced with an in-depth briefing by Colonel Mihalovič, who outlined the Centre’s strategic mission, vision, tasks and the long-term objectives of the NATO EOD COE.

The visit continued with a presentation by Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Hugyar, focusing on the specialized educational and training activities which the Centre provides to NATO and PfP personnel. Following these discussions, the President solidified the significance of the visit by signing the Centre’s Book of Honor. A significant highlight of the day was the presentation of the ETACS project, a cutting-edge training tool that utilises virtual reality and 3D models to prepare operators for the complex task of neutralising explosive hazards. The President demonstrated a profound interest in this innovative technology, engaging in an insightful and dynamic dialogue with the Centre’s subject matter experts regarding the practical application of these digital tools in modern defense operations.

The NATO EOD COE expresses its sincere gratitude for the President’s visit and his recognition of the Centre’s work. This high-level engagement serves as proof of the importance of the EOD mission and provides further motivation for personnel as they continue to advance safety and excellence in explosive ordnance disposal on a global scale.

MINE ACTION 2026
We were honoured to take part in the 22nd International Symposium “Mine Action 2026,” held in Split, Croatia, from 23 to 25 March 2026. This edition was especially notable due to the announcement that Croatia has been declared a mine-free country after 30 years of humanitarian demining.
The three-day event, organised by the Croatian Mine Action Centre - Centre for Testing, Development and Training (CTRO), offered a valuable chance to exchange experiences, discuss solutions to technical and managerial challenges, and gain insights into the latest technologies, equipment, and methods. Alongside the plenary session, the symposium also designated additional time to showcase mine action equipment, allowing participants to present their products to decision-makers from around the world.
During this symposium, LtC Witold PLEZIA delivered a presentation updating the audience on the current tasks, activities, and projects of the NATO EOD COE. Additionally, our centre had a stand in the exhibition area.
