Fighting Hunger and Promoting Education: Federal Minister Alabali Radovan visits Sierra Leone with a Large Delegation

From Jan. 21 to 23, 2026, Reem Alabali Radovan, Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, visited Sierra Leone - one of the ten poorest countries in the world - accompanied by a 36-member delegation that included MPs Diana Herbstreuth and Jürgen Coße, as well as representatives from German Agro Action (Welthungerhilfe) and the World Food Programme. The focus was i.a. on the school nutrition program supported by her Ministry - part of the new international partnership for school nutrition and education (School Meals Accelerator). In addition, the Minister reviewed German-funded initiatives regarding broader food security, private sector development, youth employment, healthcare, and clean cooking. Ms. Alabali Radovan deepened discussions with Vice President Juldeh Jalloh regarding the country’s development priorities, the political reform agenda of this vibrant democracy, and girl’s and women’s rights - including the issue of female ge***al mutilation. She praised the role of President Julius Maada Bio as Chair of ECOWAS, the 12-member West African Economic Community, modeled on the EU. Through his extensive network and frequent travel across the ECOWAS region, Bio contributed significantly to establishing and maintaining regional stability

At the end of June, the Embassy, together with partners including the Sierra Leonean Minister of Energy and his Ministry, GIZ, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), and NORAD, celebrated the successful completion of two projects: „Energising Development“ (EnDev) and „Transformational Energy Use in Sierra Leone.“ These projects have enabled 26,400 people nationwide to use clean cooking solutions and provided 17,110 people with access to electricity. In addition, 2,485 small and medium-sized enterprises and 150 social institutions benefited from the modern energy solutions. Particular emphasis was placed on utilizing solar energy instead of exploiting remaining forests for charcoal production, as well as on providing guidance and training for women. Market-oriented approaches and results-oriented financing were key elements. Following the described approach in Sierra Leone, EnDev is considered a model project in over 20 countries worldwide. The follow-up project („SURE“) is in preparation; more details will be available in autumn.

Cooperation with ECOWAS for Economic and Social Stability

From July 20–24, a Technical Mission of the ECOWAS Regional Fund for Stabilisation and Development (FRSD) was in Sierra Leone – accompanied by GIZ, KfW, and the Embassy. Established in 2018, the FRSD is the principal body of the West African economic organization, which is not unlike the European Union. The visit serves to identify targeted support for Sierra Leone: in order to address the root causes of fragility, the resilience of communities in the country is to be strengthened.

Congratulations from the Embassy: Sierra Leone celebrates its historic debut at the 61st Venice Biennale Arte (- 22nd Nov.) with the pavilion "Worlds of Today." Curated under the theme "In Minor Keys" - conceived by the late Koyo Kouoh - the pavilion fosters dialogue between West African cultures and contemporary art. "Worlds of Today" features artists from Sierra Leone and other member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), addressing themes of collaboration, memory, and social sustainability. Indeed, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Sierra Leone stands out as a space of cultural openness, creative vitality, and international exchange, where natural and cultural heritage is expressed within a context of stability, hospitality, and trust. Its first participation at the Biennale Arte continues a long tradition of friendship and exchange between Africa and Europe. Supported by ECOWAS, the Sierra Leone Pavilion is conceived as a space of active presence, where contemporary art becomes a shared language and a tool for connection. The project is led by Commissioner Fatima Maada Bio, a leading cultural personality committed to promoting Sierra Leonean artists internationally, with Prince Kevin Nyerere serving as Honorary President.

Worlds of Today

"Roads connect. People as much as goods to markets. Sierra Leone boasts thousands of kilometers of feeder roads, arteries connecting smallholder farmers across the country to the places where their produce can be traded. Most of those roads are in a bad shape, sun and raintorrents, heavy trucks and a toral lack of maintenance take a heavy toll, making many of those roads barely useable. Prices for transportation rise, post-harvest losses reach extreme proportions due to a lack of available means. This is why German cooperation financed via KfW and its partner, the National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA), reestablish those roads in vital parts of Sierra Leone. One of those vital parts being Bonthe District, designated as one rice hub for Sierra Leone, where this year over 80 Kilometers of feeder roads are about to be rebuild. Some after 50 years of waiting time for the inhabitants - a major milestone for their future prospects as the backbone of rice production in Salone."

On Saturday, 28 February, the National Museum not only hosted its Family Fun Day, but also marked the closing of the exhibition Rediscovering Cultural Cooperation – Sierra Leone and Germany in the 1960s and Beyond.
Among the many young visitors were students from the Department of History and African Studies at Fourah Bay College. They toured the exhibition with co-curator Andrea Meyer, who is supporting the department in further developing its teaching and research in cultural heritage.
