*RSLAF REACTS TO INSINUATIONS ABOUT LATE MAJOR DR BAIMBA IDRISS' RETIREMENT*
I. The attention of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) has been drawn to the continued social media commentaries insinuating that late Major Dr Baimba Idriss (Rtd) was unfairly treated before he was retired in 2024.
II. First, RSLAF would like to extend condolences to the bereaved family members and friends for the loss of the late retired military officer.
III. Out of respect for the deceased and the integrity of the Institution, for the meantime RSLAF will not release the evidence (texts, audios and videos) relating to the indiscipline and misconduct of late Major Dr Idriss (Rtd) for which he was cashiered from the Armed Forces. However, RSLAF would like to make a few clarifications.
IV. To start with, RSLAF would like to inform the public that the Institution gives *zero tolerance* to any deteriorating conduct by its officers - *such conduct include wilful disobedience to lawful orders, violation of RSLAF dress and appearance regulations, breach of media and communication policy, publication of false, abusive and defamatory statements against superiors and use of obscene and insulting language inconsistent with military ethics.*
V. Not only late Major Dr Baimba Idriss (Rtd) but also several military officers have been retired in the past as a result of deteriorating conduct beyond a certain threshold.
VI. The RSLAF would like the public to know that even before late Major Dr Idriss (Rtd) was retired, RSLAF took a number of steps aimed at reforming his conduct. The steps included: (1) he was mess-arrested as a way of cautioning him (2) he was repeatedly persuaded to reform, (3) he was given special behavioral and professional interactions and (4) he and other officers were given extended opportunities to regularise their conducts.
VII. Unfortunately, after the lapse of time given to him to reform, late Major Dr Idriss was summoned for an Interview during which he voluntarily expressed his desire to resign from the Armed Forces.
VIII. Thus, Major Dr Idriss (Rtd) was asked to engage the Chain of Command on issues of resignation but he refused to do so, and he subsequently went on Absence Without Leave (AWOL).
IX. Thus, on the 29th November, 2024, he was served with letter relating to his retirement from the Armed Forces. He was retired alongside several other officers.
X. The RSLAF would like the public to know that late Major Dr Idriss (Rtd) was enlisted into RSLAF in 2009 as a general medical practitioner. Shortly, he was financially sponsored by RSLAF to do his specialist training in Ophthalmology at Makerere University in Uganda.
XI. On his return, as a result of the limited specialist equipment at 34 Military Hospital, Major Dr Idriss (Rtd) was authorised to work at Connaught Hospital, specifically to prevent skills fade, preserve professional competence and maintain national specialist capacity. Additionally, he was also allowed to establish and operate a private clinic along King Herman Road to attend to patients with eye defects.
XII. However, with the above-mentioned opportunities granted to him, Major Dr Idriss (Rtd) was always reminded to perform his military tasks and obligations, which he gradually and persistently ignored over time and exhibited many forms of gross indiscipline which led to his termination.
XIII. The RSLAF has policies and code of conduct that all officers must adhere to. It is crucial in the discharge of our duties and nothing will whittle it down.
