The Gambian government has expressed “grave concern” over reports that some of its citizens are traveling abroad to join ongoing armed conflicts. In a recent statement, the information ministry revealed that several Gambians have reportedly lost their lives after enlisting in foreign wars. While the statement did not explicitly mention the war in Ukraine, recent investigations — including one by AFP — have shown that Russia has been recruiting African men with promises of lucrative civilian jobs, only to deploy them to fight on the frontlines in Ukraine. Other African countries such as Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa have also raised alarm about their nationals being recruited. In November, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said more than 1,400 citizens from 36 African countries had been identified among Russian forces.

A group of Zimbabwean war veterans has challenged proposed constitutional changes they say are intended to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term beyond 2028. They say it removes citizens’ right to directly elect their president. According to local media, the applicants want the court to declare the Cabinet's approval of the proposed amendment unlawful and to prevent the President from signing it into law. They argue Mnangagwa violated the Constitution by chairing discussions on a bill that could benefit him personally, saying the process undermines the will of the people and threatens constitutional democracy. The President and the Attorney General have 21 days to file a notice of opposition.

Kenyan President William Ruto has announced that the Kenya–Somalia border will reopen in April, ending a 15-year shutdown. The Mandera border post was originally closed in 2011 following a series of cross-border attacks linked to the Islamist militant group Al‑Shabaab, which has carried out deadly operations in both countries. In a message shared on X, Ruto said it was “unacceptable” that Mandera residents had been separated from relatives and neighbouring communities in Somalia for so long. The reopening is expected to revive movement and trade between northeastern Kenya and Somalia, although security challenges in the region persist.

Ghanaians are increasingly wearing traditional fugu attire every Wednesday as the country’s newly introduced “Fugu Day” gains momentum following an online debate sparked during a state visit to Zambia. The garment drew attention after President John Dramani Mahama wore fugu during his visit, where some social media users mocked the outfit. The comments prompted a wave of responses from Ghanaians defending the cultural significance of the attire.
Since the introduction of the weekly observance, more citizens have been seen wearing fugu in public spaces. Tourism Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie said the initiative aims to promote national identity and project Ghana’s culture with pride on the global stage.

Burkina Faso 🇧🇫 has reached a historic record in gold production. In 2025, the country produced 94 tonnes of gold, an increase of more than 30 tonnes from 2024.

This strong growth is due to mining reforms, tighter controls, and improved state oversight. Artisanal mining also played an important role.

Gold production generated more than 776 billion FCFA ($1.4 billion) in budget revenue by December 31, 2025.

Since Ibrahim Traoré took office, gold mines have reportedly generated about $18 billion for the country.
