Minister of Communications, Technology and Innovation, Salima Monorma Bah, has underscored the importance of regional collaboration in advancing Africa’s digital future during the 2026 West Africa Economic Integration and Investment Summit (WAIIS) in Freetown.

Speaking at the summit, Minister Bah noted that under the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio, who currently serves as Chair of Economic Community of West African States, technology is increasingly driving economic integration, investment, and growth across the region.

She described WAIIS as a key platform for engaging partners and attracting investment in regional digital infrastructure, connectivity, and data centers ahead of the Regional Investment Summit scheduled for November.

Minister Bah also highlighted the significance of the ECOWAS Regional Data Embassy Framework, emphasising that no country can secure its digital future in isolation. She called for stronger regional cooperation to enhance digital sovereignty, build resilience, and ensure Africa plays a greater role in shaping the technologies of the future.

The 18th West Africa Internet Governance Forum just concluded in Freetown with a powerful call to action.
Key takeaway from the Final Communiqué, “Digital sovereignty in West Africa should not be understood as isolation from the global Internet, but as the capacity of peoples, institutions and Member States to make informed, accountable and development-oriented choices about data, infrastructure, platforms, technologies, markets, standards, security and rights, while preserving the openness, interoperability and global nature of the Internet."

The results are concrete:

2. 13 actionable recommendations
3. Focus on platform accountability & economic justice
4. Youth at the center of digital transformation
