The Government of Sierra Leone recognizes the Diaspora as the “hidden” treasure of Sierra Leone, which must be shown and marked, and considers the Diaspora as an added value of the Sierra Leonean communities. The Directorate of Diaspora Affairs established in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation goal is to facilitate trust and the involvement of the Sierra Leonean Diaspora
contribution with supportive policies that change the quality of the relationship and strengthens the ties of Sierra Leoneans wherever they are with each other and their homeland. The Directorate will serve as a one stop resource center for Sierra Leonean Diaspora community, and also serves as a deliberate and forward looking attempt by government to tap fully into the vast potentials of its diaspora community, and will strengthen and facilitate Sierra Leoneans’ relations with their host countries through cooperation policies with the Diaspora and migrants. The Directorate seeks to support the improvement of the Sierra Leonean diaspora’s position in relation to the promotion and protection of their rights and interests. Its offers assistance for the preservation of national language and cultural heritage; promote technical and economic cooperation between the country of origin and the diaspora; engender cooperation for peace, well-being and social solidarity of the whole nation. The Directorate works towards facilitating links with Sierra Leoneans from the Diaspora to different business ventures, Ministries, Departments and Agencies. It supports the organization of Sierra Leonean communities in the world, in a structured diaspora, in order to factorize them in the interaction to acceleration of the development of the country. The overall objective of the Directorate is to establish a strategic framework for mobilizing and integrating Sierra Leone Diaspora in the national development process; facilitate an increased contribution of the Sierra Leone diaspora in the socio-economic and political development of the Republic of Sierra Leone.
