The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) participated in the official opening ceremony of the refurbished Government Printing Department (GPD), represented by the Executive Assistant to the Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman, Mr Dominic Tucker.

The landmark event, organised by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education in collaboration with the People’s Republic of China through the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone, was held under the theme: β€œPrinting the Future of Sierra Leone.”

The ceremony was graced by the Hon. Vice President, Dr Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, who delivered the keynote address, performed the ribbon-cutting ceremony, and led a guided tour of the modernised GPD facilities.

The event brought together Ministers, Members of Parliament, Government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, including the Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone and Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to China, alongside other distinguished guests.

The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) wishes to inform the general public that it is providing logistical support to the Electoral Commission of Guinea, through the Guinean Embassy in Sierra Leone, for the conduct of Guinea’s Legislative and Municipal Elections for registered Guinean nationals resident in Sierra Leone.
The elections are scheduled for Sunday, 31st May 2026, across designated polling centres in Bo, Kenema, Kono, Kabala, Makeni, Kambia, Western Rural, and Western Urban.
This support is in line with the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC) framework aimed at strengthening cooperation among Election Management Bodies within the West African sub-region.

The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs (MLG&CA), successfully conducted the Paramount Chieftaincy Election in Dodo Chiefdom, Kenema District.

Four qualified candidates contested the election. Following the first round, which did not produce an outright winner, a runoff election was conducted between:

The process recorded the participation of over 800 Traditional Authorities, reflecting strong engagement in local governance and democratic participation.

The election was monitored and validated by appointed Assessor Chiefs in accordance with the Chieftaincy Act, 2009, alongside senior officials from ECSL and MLG&CA, ensuring transparency, credibility, and adherence to traditional and legal procedures.

To further strengthen public confidence in the process, the Election Observation Network (EON) was formally accredited under the Public Elections Act, 2022, with six accredited observers independently monitoring the election.

The Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), Mr Edmond Sylvester Alpha, alongside Electoral Commissioners Alex Saffa and Abubakar Koroma, paid a courtesy visit to the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) in Freetown.

Welcoming the delegation, SLAJ President, Alhaji Manika Kamara, expressed appreciation for the visit and reaffirmed SLAJ’s commitment to building a strong and professional partnership with ECSL aimed at promoting balanced, factual, and unbiased electoral reporting in support of democracy and good governance.

The Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs (MLGCA), in collaboration with the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), today engaged key stakeholders in Samaya Town, headquarters of Tambakha Simibungie Chiefdom, Karene District, North-West Region, ahead of the forthcoming Paramount Chieftaincy Elections.

The engagement brought together local authorities, women and youth leaders, representatives of the ruling houses, and other community stakeholders to foster dialogue, promote peace, and ensure a transparent and democratic electoral process.

The meeting focused on verifying Chiefdom Councillors and addressing long-standing governance issues affecting Paramount Chieftaincy elections.
Key Highlights:
1. Stronger Verification Process – MLGCA Permanent Secretary Prince Alex Sorieba emphasized that the verification exercise will tackle bottlenecks in local elections and find lasting, amicable solutions.
2. Military Personnel & Elections – Active military personnel cannot contest presidential or parliamentary elections while serving. However, they are legally permitted to contest Paramount Chieftaincy elections.
3. Selection of Tribal Authorities – The sole responsibility for choosing Tribal Authorities rests with Town Chiefs, not Section Chiefs.
4. Next Steps – ECSL will engage stakeholders soon on upcoming electoral activities. Government aims to conduct all pending Paramount Chieftaincy elections as soon as possible.

The Ministry views this engagement as a major step toward restoring clarity, order, and trust in Kailahun’s chieftaincy structures. Local authorities, traditional leaders, and residents of Jaluahun Chiefdom are urged to cooperate fully with the verification and electoral processes.
