🚀 *Empowering the Future of Law Reform with Artificial Intelligence!* 🚀
*The Law Reform Commission* recently concluded an intensive 2-day in-house capacity-building workshop for our dedicated staff members at the Law Reform Commission (LRC) on *"Augmenting Legal Reform: Practical AI Applications, Ethics, and Efficiency"*. The sessions were expertly facilitated by Mohamed Wurie Bah, AI Governance, Data Protection and Tech & Innovation Law Expert.
As one of the largest "text processing industries in Sierra Leone," the LRC handles extensive legal research, comparative analysis, and massive volumes of stakeholder feedback. To tackle this information burden, our staff members dove into a hands-on "sandbox" environment to learn how to effectively team human legal expertise with machine speed—addressing what experts call the *"Centaur's Dilemma"*.
Throughout the workshop, several General Purpose AI (GPAI) tools were introduced to the staff, including *Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot*. Most importantly, our team practiced extensively using *NotebookLM for research and Canva for presentations*, enabling them to synthesize consultation data and visually map out complex legal issues.
Key takeaways from our 2 days of training included:
✨ Mastering the *C.R.E.A.T.E. formula* for prompt engineering to retrieve accurate legal research and draft statutory outlines.
✨ Accelerating our workflows by using AI to extract themes and generate neutral summaries from hundreds of pages of public consultation submissions.
✨ Emphasizing the *"Human-in-the-Loop" verification process* to combat AI "hallucinations" (fabricated cases) and correct for biases due to data poverty in African legal systems.
✨ Establishing strict institutional guardrails, centered on the *Golden Rule of AI Legal Research to NEVER input confidential government data, or client information into a public AI platform*
By successfully completing this training, the LRC is taking a massive leap toward becoming a *forward-thinking, digitally empowered institution*. We are excited to leverage these modern technological tools to increase our research velocity and tackle the modern legislative challenges of Sierra Leone! 🇸🇱⚖️
