ity, this social media platform is very key for its public information activities as this will serve as a platform to interface with water users and key community stakeholders in the management of water resources in Sierra Leone. Awareness raising helps build trust with communities and water users, which in turn hugely aids the successful performance of our functions. This could also inform the Agency of some concerns regarding our work.

NWRMA Capacitates Sierra Leone’s Citizen Scientists

Citizen science is one of the newest approaches to water monitoring in the world. It is the integration of locals along riverine areas in water resources management with the sole aim to monitor the resources with real-time information at a less cost. In 2021, Sierra Leone, through the Agency, employed this strategy as part of its application of the integrated water resources management principle, by integrating citizen scientists as part of the monitoring of water resources of Sierra Leone, particularly in hard-to-reach areas. As part of the integration process and to yield the required result of supporting the Agency in its monitoring strive, the Agency has ever since engaged in the development of the capacities of ninety-eight (98) citizen scientists in monitoring and reporting procedures across the Rokel and Taia River Basins.
Last week, the Agency embarked on sharpening the knowledge of these scientists by conducting trainings in their various localities in monitoring procedures and data collection, presentation of monitoring infographics and improvement on how to enhance collaboration between the Agency and participating communities. The process aimed at strengthening monitoring capacity, improve data quality, and sustain volunteer participation in the national hydrological monitoring network.

NWRMA Participates in the Stakeholder Engagement on EWRC Structures Review Organised by PSRU.

The Public Sector Reform Unit (PSRU) and the Electricity and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC) have initiated a collaborative process to engage stakeholders in the review of EWRC’s institutional structures between the16th and the 18th April 2026 at the Occasion Resort, Lakka. The engagement is aimed at strengthening regulatory frameworks, enhancing service delivery, and ensuring that the Commission remains responsive to the evolving needs of Sierra Leone’s electricity and water sectors.

The Chairman Board of Directors of the Commission, Honourable P.K. Lansana Ing. expressed his heartfelt appreciation to all stakeholders and reiterated the importance of the engagement. "This engagement signals a significant milestone in the reformation of the Commission as it aims to review a wide range of structures including the regulatory framework and governance structures, etc." He said!

The Agency as one of the stakeholders in the engagement process recommended through its Director of Legal, Regulations and Outreach, Abu Bakarr Iscandri Conteh Esq. the importance of collaboration as a strategy to achieving institutional significance. He emphasized that regulatory institutions are established by law to fix a fundamental anomaly. "The success of institutions (particularly regulatory bodies) is dependent on compliance, which can be effectively achieved through strategic collaborations." He said!

This joint initiative by PSRU and EWRC underscores the importance of inclusive stakeholder engagement in public sector reforms. By reviewing and refining EWRC’s structures, Sierra Leone aims to build a more effective regulatory environment that supports sustainable development, protects consumers, and fosters growth in the electricity and water sectors.
