Chinese medical team performs landmark gynecological surgery in Sierra Leone

The China-Sierra Leone Friendship Hospital recently celebrated a historic medical milestone. Song Yuying, a gynecologist with the 27th Chinese (Hunan) Medical Team to Sierra Leone, successfully performed the country's first extrafascial total hysterectomy with sacrouterine ligament suspension at the hospital, marking a new standard for gynecological care in the country.

The patient, Mariama Bundu, was admitted with multiple large, overlapping uterine fibroids. Preoperative CT scans startled the local medical staff: her uterus was densely packed with dozens of large tumors — the largest exceeding 15 cm in diameter — causing the organ to distend to the size of a seven-month pregnancy and nearly completely occupy her pelvic and abdominal cavities.

Given the severity of the pathology and the fact that the patient had no further childbearing needs, Song collaborated with the local gynecological team to design an optimized surgical plan.

To thoroughly eradicate the lesions and eliminate the risk of tumor recurrence, she decided to bypass the traditional local "subtotal hysterectomy" in favor of an extrafascial total hysterectomy — an internationally recognized standard surgical technique. Following a thorough discussion with the patient, the historic operation commenced on May 20.

As Song methodically executed the surgery, she simultaneously explained key operational checkpoints to the local team. Supporting her were the medical team's anesthesiologist, Wang Xitang, and nursing expert, Tan Yan, whose specialized care ensured the procedure's steady progress.

However, midway through the operation, the hospital suffered a sudden power outage, plunging the theater into darkness as the indoor temperature rapidly climbed.

In West Africa, where electrical infrastructure is aging, sudden blackouts are a routine challenge for local medical staff. Remaining calm, the team instantly adjusted, turning on emergency flashlights while relying on a single power-storing shadowless lamp to sustain the operation in the dim, stiflingly hot environment.

The sudden power outage lasted approximately 30 minutes to an hour. Facing the dual pressures of oppressive heat and heavily compromised lighting, Song leveraged her anatomical expertise and clinical experience to accurately identify the delicate tissue layers within the restricted surgical field.

Operating with precision, she successfully excised the massive, tumor-riddled uterus, which weighed an astonishing 2.8 kg, bringing the surgery to a successful conclusion.

Compared to local traditional methods, this surgical approach offers clear anatomical visualization, guarantees thorough removal with zero risk of recurrence or future cervical cancer, and facilitates rapid postoperative recovery.

Thanks to the technique of the Chinese experts, the patient's recovery has been exceptionally smooth; she was able to walk on the very first postoperative day and has now safely returned to her normal life.

When Song came to check on her, Mariama was filled with the joy of a new lease on life. Looking up at her doctor, she practiced her broken yet deeply sincere Chinese, saying: "Xie Xie! Wo Ai Zhong Guo!" (Thank you! I love China!)

Samuel Ngaujah, a local physician who assisted throughout the entire procedure, also expressed immense admiration for Song's skills. "This extrafascial total hysterectomy is incredibly valuable to us," he said. "It not only addresses the patient's clinical needs far better, but its clear anatomical pathways, minimal blood loss, and rapid recovery times make it the exact technique we need to adopt. I am highly eager to have more opportunities to learn this advanced procedure from Song."

The successful ex*****on of this first-of-its-kind surgery not only establishes a new benchmark for gynecological treatment in Sierra Leone but also reflects the dedication of the Chinese medical team — a testament to the enduring medical cooperation and friendship between China and Sierra Leone.

Ambassador Zhao Yong had a written interview with Sierra Leonean Media on the Taiwan Question

Recently, Ambassador Zhao Yong accepted a written interview with Sierra Leonean Media on the Taiwan question. He elaborated the historical context of the Taiwan question, expounded on the one-China Principle, and exposed the erroneous actions of “Taiwan independence” separatist forces as well as the sinister intentions of external forces seeking to “use Taiwan to contain China.” The main points are as follows:
1. Could the Ambassador please briefly outline the origins of the Taiwan question?
Taiwan has belonged to China since ancient times. The historical context is clear, and the legal basis is indisputable. In 230 AD, during the Three Kingdoms period, Sun Quan, King of Wu Kingdom, dispatched officials and troops to Taiwan. Ever since Song and Yuan dynasties, successive central governments of China had established administrative control over Taiwan. In 1895, the defeated Qing Dynasty government was forced to cede Taiwan to Japan, but Japan’s colonial history in Taiwan has no legitimacy. Taiwan compatriots never ceased their dauntless struggle throughout the Japanese occupation. In 1937, the Chinese people threw themselves into an all-out war of resistance against Japanese aggression, and the struggle against Japanese colonial rule in Taiwan was an integral part of the Chinese nation’s nationwide resistance. After Japan’s defeat in 1945, Taiwan was liberated and returned to China’s territory. The restoration of Taiwan to China is an important part of the outcomes of WWII victory and post-war international order. A series of instruments with legal effect under international law, including the Cairo Declaration, the Potsdam Proclamation, and the Japanese Instrument of Surrender, have all clearly affirmed China’s sovereignty over Taiwan. The question regarding the status of Taiwan has already been completely settled following the victory of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression in 1945.
2. How should we understand the one-China Principle? What is its connection to UNGA Resolution No. 2758?
The one-China Principle has three fundamental implications: There is but one China in the world. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. The Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. The one-China Principle is the premise and foundation of UNGA Resolution No. 2758, which solemnly affirms and fully embodies the one-China Principle. The resolution makes clear that there is only one China in the world, that the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legitimate representative of the whole of China, including Taiwan, and that there are no “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan.” Sierra Leone was one of the co-sponsors of the resolution, and China deeply appreciates this.
The adoption of the Resolution No.2758 has had broad and far-reaching political implications, and the international community has generally adhered to it. To date, 183 countries have established and developed diplomatic relations with China on the basis of the one-China Principle. At the same time, following the adoption of the Resolution, all official U.N. documents referred to Taiwan as “Taiwan, province of China.” It was clearly stated in the official legal opinions of the Office of Legal Affairs of the U.N. Secretariat that “the United Nations considers ‘Taiwan’ as a province of China with no separate status” and the “‘authorities’ in ‘Taipei’ are not considered to enjoy any form of government status.” In accordance with the one-China principle, organizations such as the World Trade Organization, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, and the Asian Development Bank have made arrangements for Taiwan to participate in their activities under the name “Chinese Taipei.” These vivid examples of multilateral and bilateral diplomatic practices fully demonstrate the understanding and respect of all parties for China’s efforts to safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, which continue to solidify the international community’s commitment to the one-China principle.
3. What is China’s comment on the recent visit by Lai Ching-te, the so-called leader of Taiwan Region, to Eswatini?
China has repeatedly reaffirmed that there’s no longer a so-called “ROC president” in the world anymore. Anyone who wears that false title is acting against history and will only invite disgrace upon themselves. Previously, Lai Ching-te had planned to make a clandestine visit to Eswatini last April, but his scheme was thwarted due to the firm adherence of relevant African countries to the One-China Principle. What was even more shocking was that on May 2, just hours within the Yilan earthquake, Lai Ching-te ditched the people in Taiwan who were still reeling from the disaster and sneaked onto a foreign plane to “smuggle” himself out of the island, squandering taxpayers’ money and performing a laughable stunt in front of the world. That just added yet another episode to the scandalous “Taiwan independence” separatism.
The undignified act of Lai Ching-te and his like once again proves that the one-China principle has long been a basic norm in international relations and prevailing international consensus. No matter how “Taiwan independence” forces try to cover up their nature or change appearance, nothing can save their reputation or help them escape the denunciation of the international community.
4. Based on the One-China Principle, how can China and Sierra Leone work together to safeguard each other’s core interests and achieve common development?
China and Sierra Leone share a deep-rooted traditional friendship, and both sides have consistently and firmly supported each other’s core interests. In recent years, the Sierra Leonean government has repeatedly reaffirmed its firm adherence to the One-China Principle. In the 2024 China-Sierra Leone joint statement on deepening comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, the Sierra Leonean side reiterated its firm commitment to the one-China principle, recognizing that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. The Sierra Leonean side firmly opposes any form of "Taiwan independence" or external interference in the internal affairs of China, reaffirms that it will not develop any form of official exchanges with Taiwan and will support all efforts made by the Chinese government to achieve national reunification. The Chinese side deeply appreciates the firm stance of Sierra Leone on Taiwan question, which not only serves as the political foundation of China-Sierra Leone relations but also vividly demonstrates the deepening political mutual trust between the two countries. China is willing to work with Sierra Leone to continue firmly supporting each other on issues involving each other’s core interests and major concerns, uphold the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, safeguard international fairness and justice, and jointly promote world peace, security, and prosperity.

Speaker Thomas Calls on Sierra Leone to Uphold the One China Policy
The Rt. Hon. Speaker of the Sixth Parliament of the Second Republic of Sierra Leone, Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, has announced the establishment of the Sierra Leone- China Parliamentary Friendship Group. He also called on Sierra Leone to continue supporting the One China Policy, describing it as a cornerstone of the growing bilateral relationship between the two nations.
Providing an update to the House following a recent meeting with the Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Speaker Thomas announced the formal establishment of a Sierra Leone–China Parliamentary Friendship Group. The group is intended to facilitate regular parliamentary exchanges, strengthen legislative cooperation, and deepen mutual understanding between the two countries.
“The Parliamentary Friendship Group will serve as a platform to promote closer collaboration in areas of governance, trade, education, and cultural exchange,” Speaker Thomas stated. He added that the initiative also reflects Sierra Leone’s continued support for the One China Policy, which recognizes the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government representing China.
The establishment of the Friendship Group marks another step in the strengthening of diplomatic and parliamentary relations between the two nations, which have cooperated extensively in infrastructure, health, education, and capacity building over the years.

President Xi Jinping Holds Welcoming Banquet for U.S. President Donald J. Trump
On the evening of May 14, President Xi Jinping held a welcoming banquet for U.S. President Donald J. Trump at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

The Great Hall of the People was adorned with dazzling lights. The two heads of state delivered their toasts respectively.
President Xi pointed out that this year marks the start of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan for economic and social development. The over 1.4 billion people of China, drawing on the rich heritage of our over-5,000-year civilization, are advancing Chinese modernization on all fronts through high-quality development. This year is also the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. The over 300 million American people are reinvigorating the spirit of patriotism, innovation and enterprise, and ushering in a new journey for the development of the United States. The peoples of China and the United States are both great peoples. Achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can go hand in hand. We can help each other succeed and advance the well-being of the whole world.

President Xi noted that 55 years ago, “Ping-Pong diplomacy” was carried out between our two countries. The door that had remained frozen for over 20 years was opened, marking a milestone in contemporary international relations. From then on, China and the United States have written many chapters of friendship through mutual opening up to each other and cooperation. In this new era, President Trump and I have had multiple meetings and phone calls and kept China-U.S. relations generally stable. We both believe that the China-U.S. relationship is the most important bilateral relationship in the world. We must make it work, and never mess it up. Both China and the United States stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation. Our two countries should be partners rather than rivals. President Trump and I also agreed to build a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability to promote the steady, sound and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations, and bring more peace, prosperity and progress to the world.

President Xi pointed out that looking back at the course of China-U.S. relations, whether or not we could have mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation is the key to whether the relationship can advance steadily. China-U.S. relations concern the well-being of the over 1.7 billion people of both countries, and affect the interests of the over eight billion people of the world. Both sides should rise up to this historic responsibility and steer the giant ship of China-U.S. relations forward steadily and in the right direction.

President Trump thanked President Xi for the gracious reception accorded to him. He noted that today is a fantastic day, this visit is an important one, and the two sides had positive and constructive conversations. The American and Chinese peoples share mutual appreciation and respect, and their friendship goes back a long way. U.S.-China relations are the most consequential bilateral relationship in the world. Together the two countries have a chance to create a better future for the world.
Li Qiang, Cai Qi, Wang Yi, and He Lifeng attended the banquet.

President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald J. Trump Visit the Temple of Heaven
On May 14, President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald J. Trump, who is on a state visit to China, visited the Temple of Heaven.

In the refreshing breeze of early summer, the Temple of Heaven is adorned with elegant old cypress trees. President Xi greeted President Trump at the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests.

President Xi and President Trump took photos together on the spacious square of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests.
The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is a magnificent structure with triple eaves and glazed tiles. The two heads of state walked up the steps and entered the Hall. Together, they admired the exquisite engineering of mortise and tenon and wooden brackets and the perfect integration of astronomical calendar and the Hall’s structure, and appreciated the concept of harmony among all things and respect for the law of nature.

President Xi noted that we toured the Palace Museum along the Central Axis of Beijing in 2017. The Temple of Heaven is as old as the Palace Museum. It captures the idea that Heaven is round and Earth is square, and reflects the view on the universe and guiding philosophy of the Chinese people. Ancient Chinese rulers would hold prayer ceremonies here for prosperity of the nation, happiness of the people and good harvests, which embodies the traditional Chinese ethos that people are the foundation of a country and only when the people lead a good life can the country thrive. Carrying forward and developing the people-centered philosophy in Chinese civilization, the Communist Party of China has stayed committed to the abiding mission of serving the people wholeheartedly and has gained firm support and heartfelt endorsement of the people.
President Trump said that he still vividly remembers his visit to the Palace Museum. The Temple of Heaven, still standing tall after over 600 years, showcases the fine art of classical Chinese architecture as well as the splendid and profound traditional culture, which is incredible. The United States and China are both great countries, and the two peoples are great people with wisdom. The two countries should deepen mutual understanding and promote friendship among the peoples.

Cai Qi, Wang Yi, and Yin Li attended the event.

President Xi Jinping Holds Talks with U.S. President Donald J. Trump

On the morning of May 14, President Xi Jinping held talks with U.S. President Donald J. Trump, who is on a state visit to China, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
President Xi noted that transformation not seen in a century is accelerating across the globe, and the international situation is fluid and turbulent. Can China and the United States overcome the Thucydides Trap and create a new paradigm of major-country relations? Can we meet global challenges together and provide greater stability for the world? Can we build a bright future together for our bilateral relations in the interest of the well-being of the two peoples and the future of humanity? These are the questions vital to history, to the world, and to the people. They are the questions of our times that the leaders of major countries need to answer together. I stand ready to work together with President Trump to set the course and steer the giant ship of China-U.S. relations, so as to make 2026 a historic, landmark year that opens up a new chapter in China-U.S. relations.

President Xi stressed that China is committed to a steady, sound and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations. I have agreed with President Trump on a new vision of building a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability. This will provide strategic guidance for China-U.S. relations over the next three years and beyond, and will be well received by the people of both countries and the international community. “Constructive strategic stability” means positive stability with cooperation as the mainstay, healthy stability with competition within proper limits, constant stability with manageable differences, and lasting stability with expectable peace. Building a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability is not a slogan. It means actions in the same direction.

President Xi noted that China-U.S. economic and trade ties are mutually beneficial and win-win in nature. Where disagreements and frictions exist, equal-footed consultation is the only right choice. Yesterday, our economic and trade teams produced generally balanced and positive outcomes. This is good news for the people of the two countries and the world. The two sides should jointly sustain the good momentum that we have worked hard to create. China will only open its door wider. U.S. businesses are deeply involved in China’s reform and opening up. China welcomes more mutually beneficial cooperation from the U.S.

President Xi pointed out that the two sides should implement the important common understandings we have reached, and make better use of communication channels in the political and diplomatic and military-to-military fields. The two countries should expand exchanges and cooperation in areas such as the economy and trade, health, agriculture, tourism, people-to-people ties and law enforcement.

President Xi stressed that the Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-U.S. relations. If it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy. “Taiwan independence” and cross-Strait peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water. Safeguarding peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is the biggest common denominator between China and the U.S. The U.S. side must exercise extra caution in handling the Taiwan question.
President Trump said that it was a great honor to pay a state visit to China. The United States and China have a very good relationship. President Xi and I have had the longest and greatest relationship the presidents of the two countries have ever had. We have enjoyed friendly communication and worked out many important issues. President Xi is a great leader, and China is a great country. I have tremendous respect for President Xi and the Chinese people. Our meeting today is the biggest summit the world is watching. I will work together with President Xi to strengthen communication and cooperation, properly handle differences, make bilateral relations better than ever before and embrace a fantastic future. The United States and China are the most important and most powerful countries in the world. Together, we can do a lot of big and good things for the two countries and the world. I have brought with me the best representatives of American businesses. They all respect and value China. I strongly encourage them to expand their cooperation with China.

The two presidents exchanged views on major international and regional issues, such as the Middle East situation, the Ukraine crisis, and the Korean Peninsula.

The two presidents agreed to support each other in hosting a successful APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and G20 Summit this year.

During the meeting, President Trump asked each of the business leaders who were traveling with him to present themselves to President Xi.
Prior to the talks, President Xi held a welcome ceremony for President Trump on the square outside the eastern entrance of the Great Hall of the People.
As President Trump arrived, honor guards lined up in salutation. After the two presidents stepped onto the reviewing stand, the military band played the national anthems of China and the United States. A 21-gun salute was performed on the Tian’anmen Square. President Trump reviewed the guard of honor of the People’s Liberation Army and watched the march-past in President Xi’s company.

Cai Qi, Wang Yi, and He Lifeng attended the talks.

Phoenix TV: The 79th World Health Assembly (WHA) will open on May 18. Taiwan has not yet been invited to attend. Does the Chinese government have any comment on that?

Guo Jiakun: There is but one China in the world. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. The Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. China’s position on the Taiwan region’s participation in the activities of international organizations, including the WHO, is consistent and clear. That is, this must be handled in line with the one-China principle, which is also a fundamental principle recognized by UNGA Resolution 2758 and WHA Resolution 25.1.

China’s Taiwan region, unless given approval by the Central Government, has no basis, reason or right to participate in the WHA. Due to the DPP authorities’ persistent separatist stance, the political foundation for the Taiwan region to participate in the WHA no longer exists. To uphold the one-China principle as well as the sanctity and authority of relevant UNGA and WHA resolutions, China has decided not to approve the Taiwan region’s participation in this year’s WHA. Any attempt to play the “Taiwan card” for political manipulation in defiance of the one-China principle is doomed to fail.
