Meet our new European External Action Service - EEAS (EEAS) Secretary-General

Following the great work of Belén Martínez Carbonell, we are pleased to welcome Kajsa Ollongren as the new EEAS Secretary-General.

Previously EU Special Representative for Human Rights and former Minister of Defence and Interior and Deputy Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Kajsa Ollongren brings extensive experience to her new role, supporting HR/VP Kaja Kallas in shaping EU foreign policy and security.

Through the YOULEAD Project, is supporting youths in Falaba District with leadership opportunities, vocational and digital skills, entrepreneurship support, internships, start-up kits, business grants, and platforms to participate meaningfully in decision-making and community development.

We are grateful to the European Union in Sierra Leone 🇪🇺 and Christian Aid Ireland for their generous support and continued partnership in investing in youths and advancing inclusive development in Sierra Leone.

This morning, the European Union Delegation attended the second Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) working group with civil society organizations to draft a Code of Conduct for Electoral Observers. This is an important step forward in the implementation of Tripartite Recommendation 41 and will contribute to a more credible and transparent 2028 electoral cycle.

BBC Media Action and the Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG), through the EU-funded MEDIA Project, have presented two landmark policy documents to government and media leaders.

The proposed reforms aim to strengthen SLBC into an independent, financially sustainable public service broadcaster; protect community media through a new national policy that empowers local voices.

Developed through wide consultations with journalists, civil society, Parliament, and other stakeholders, these recommendations build on the Tripartite Committee Report.

Deputy Minister Hon. Bockarie Abdel-Aziz Bawoh reaffirmed government’s commitment to enabling a diverse, independent, and professional media—highlighting the vital role of community radios in civic engagement.

Together, these reforms mark a step towards a more independent, inclusive, and sustainable media landscape that amplifies diverse voices and strengthens Sierra Leone’s democracy.

𝗘𝗨 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵 €𝟰𝟳𝟵,𝟵𝟲𝟰 𝗦𝗨𝗥𝗚𝗘 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁

The European Union is proud to stand with the Freetown City Council for the official launch of the Strengthening Urban Governance for Effective Service Delivery and Local Economic Development (SURGE) Project in Freetown last week.

This €479,964 project is a major EU investment, enhancing accountable citizen‑centred local governance in Sierra Leone. Through this intervention, the EU is supporting FCC to:

🔹 Strengthen institutional capacity and service delivery
🔹 Expand economic opportunities for women and youth, including the reconstruction of the King Jimmy Market, and support to sanitation and recycling livelihoods
🔹 Enhance participatory urban planning and transparent decision‑making processes
🔹 Improve financial management and revenue generation for the council
🔹 Promote a cleaner, safer, more vibrant Freetown

SURGE is part of a broader EU programme supporting seven Local Councils nationwide, sustainably contributing to infrastructure development, community empowerment and strengthening the capacity of local councils to deliver on their mandates to the people.

These investments are the EU's long‑term partnership that strengthens decentralisation, create jobs, expand market opportunities, and improve daily lives for citizens, especially women and young people.

The EU is committed to working closely with FCC and all partners to deliver meaningful, lasting impact for the people of Sierra Leone. 🇪🇺🤝🇸🇱
