In 18th-century Quebec, when an enslaved person escaped, their owner would place a runaway notice in the Quebec or Montreal gazettes. It described their face, their clothing, their scars, the languages they spoke so they could be found and returned to captivity.

Two centuries later, those notices are the only records we have of what these people looked like. Unlike the rest of the Americas, Quebec has left behind no visual depictions of enslaved people.

"Fugitifs! Visages retrouvés", conceived by Senegalese-Canadian historian and hip-hop artist Webster, grew out of that paradox. Nine Quebec illustrators have created ten life-size drawings that restore a face to thirteen of them.

Slavery did exist in Canada: more than 4,000 enslaved people have been documented in Quebec's history alone, up to abolition in 1834.

The Embassy of Canada is proud to have supported Webster in bringing this exhibition to the Musée des civilisations noires.

Great news, just one month after the inaugural flight! 🎉

Air Transat has just announced that its direct Montreal–Dakar route (the only one directly connecting Canada to West Africa) will operate year-round.

Starting October 30, 2026, and running through March 26, 2027, a weekly flight every Friday will provide service throughout the winter season, operated by the Airbus A330, the largest aircraft in Air Transat’s fleet.

This isn’t a surprise…it’s confirmation! The demand is real, the human ties between our two countries are deep, and this route is here to strengthen those ties!

For the Senegalese diaspora in Quebec, for families, entrepreneurs, and travelers on both sides of the Atlantic: the path to Dakar (or to Montreal!) remains open, even in winter.

This morning, on Gorée Island, a research methodology workshop opened for members of the "Groupe de Réflexion et de Recherches-Elsie" (GRRE).

Organized by the Embassy of Canada in collaboration with the Gorée Institute, the workshop equips GRRE members to produce strong policy briefs: key tools for effective advocacy on gender equality for women in uniform, as part of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda.

A great example of what we can achieve when working hand in hand with our partners. 🇨🇦🇸🇳
