Ceremony Marks the Start of Safer Urban Infrastructure in Gabiley

Today, Taakulo, in collaboration with the local government, officially launched the construction of environmentally friendly stainless-steel cover slabs for two major drainage systems in the #18 May area.

The groundbreaking ceremony brought together officials, the of Gabiley local government, representatives from Alliance, the Director of TAAKULO, leaders, and distinguished guests to mark the beginning of this important infrastructure initiative.

As urban populations continue to grow, particularly in secondary cities such as Gabiley, urban areas are increasingly experiencing congestion, pressure on infrastructure, and challenges related to unmanaged urban expansion.

However, local government is planning to effectively address the needs of Affected Communities (DACs) in the face of increasing urban challenges caused by forced displacement and migration. At the same time, it promotes key local stakeholders to become more resilient and better prepared for the impacts of human mobility.

Under the Programme Sustainable Urban Integration for Displacement-Affected Communities a four-day capacity-building training was successfully conducted for local government technical staff and councilors.

The training focused on enhancing participants’ knowledge and practical skills in the inclusive planning, design, and management of public spaces, while emphasizing the critical role public spaces play in promoting sustainable urban development, social cohesion, and community wellbeing to ensure cities remain inclusive, functional, safe, and accessible for all residents.

The training was implemented by Taakulo under the Programme as part of ongoing efforts to promote inclusive and sustainable urban development in Gabiley.

Psychosocial distress and mental issues increase during displacement, refugee as people are forced to adopt new life with limited resources. Services including MPSS become overwhelmed due to inadequate skills and training to provide effective services and increased demand.

With the financial support of the European Union, technical support of Cities Alliance and strong collaboration with Somaliland gov’t, Taakulo successfully completed a three-day training for healthcare workers, CBO representatives, and community members from DAC-hosting areas in Borama.

Training aimed at providing relevant and necessary skills to deliver inclusive and accessible MHPSS.
Certificates were awarded to participants in recognition of their successful completion and commitment to improving community health services for displacement-affected communities.

During the recent drought crisis, coastal communities faced severe shortages of water and pasture, placing significant pressure on livelihoods. In response, Taakulo Somali Community, with funding support from Danish Muslim Aid (DM-Aid), implemented a water project by establishing improved water wells in the hard-to-reach villages of Abdaal and Doxaguban.

The project has enabled #3,030 people to access safe and reliable drinking water, as well as water for livestock and small-scale irrigation. These strategic water sources have significantly strengthened water supply and enhanced community resilience.

Taakulo extends its sincere appreciation to Danish Muslim Aid for their valuable support.
