SOMALIA RECEIVES 154 SOMALI REFUGEES RETURNING VOLUNTARILY FROM YEMEN

Mogadishu, Somalia | 26 August 2026

The Federal Republic of Somalia, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, today received 154 Somali refugees who returned voluntarily from Yemen. The returnees were received on arrival at Aden Adde International Airport by a Federal Government delegation led by Mr. Ibrahim Gure Mohamed, Director of the Department of Diaspora Affairs.

The operation was carried out through close coordination between the Ministry, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Somalia in Yemen, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the National Commission for Refugees and IDPs (NCRI). The Embassy managed arrangements on the ground, including engagement with the relevant Yemeni authorities and support for the documentation and travel of the returnees. UNHCR ensured the return was conducted in accordance with the principles of voluntariness, safety and dignity, while NCRI supported reception, protection and reintegration. The Ministry expresses its appreciation to both institutions for their partnership.

The Ministry reaffirms that the protection of Somali nationals abroad remains a core obligation of Somalia's foreign policy, and will continue working with its diplomatic missions and international partners to facilitate further voluntary returns.

Federal Government Successfully Repatriates 155 Somali Refugees from Yemen

The Federal Republic of Somalia has successfully repatriated 155 Somali nationals from Yemen who arrived at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu. Ibrahim Guure Maxamed, Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, led the welcoming reception alongside representatives from the National Commission for Refugees and IDPs (NCRI) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The repatriation reflects the Federal Government's commitment to protecting Somali citizens abroad and supporting their safe, dignified return home. The Ministry coordinated this effort through the Somali Embassy in Yemen and international partners, demonstrating Somalia's institutional capacity to facilitate voluntary returns in accordance with humanitarian standards. The Government extends its appreciation to UNHCR and NCRI for their continued partnership in assisting vulnerable Somali migrants.

Somalia Concludes Virtual International Diaspora Conference on Investment and National Development

Mogadishu, Somalia | 01 August 2026

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, through its Department of Diaspora and Community Affairs, successfully convened a virtual International Diaspora Conference, bringing together Somali diaspora members, community leaders, business figures, and experts from across the globe. The conference was opened by Permanent Secretary Hamza Adan.

Discussions focused on strengthening the diaspora's role in Somalia's reconstruction and development. Participants agreed to expand secure investment opportunities for the diaspora and endorsed ongoing efforts to establish a Global Diaspora Advisory Council, envisioned as an official platform linking the diaspora with the Federal Government of Somalia.

The conference concluded in a spirit of mutual understanding, with participants affirming their commitment to sustaining regular virtual engagements between the Ministry and Somalia's global diaspora community.

Department of Diaspora Affairs-MFA and Office of the Prime Minister Strengthen Cooperation on Diaspora Engagement.

Mogadishu, Tuesday, 30 June 2026 –

The Department of Diaspora Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation convened a coordination meeting with the Inclusive Politics Pillar of the Office of the Prime Minister to strengthen institutional collaboration on advancing Somalia's diaspora engagement agenda.

The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation to maximize the contribution of the Somali diaspora to national development through knowledge and skills transfer, investment, peacebuilding, inclusive governance, and implementation of the National Transformation Plan (2025–2029).

Both institutions agreed to establish a Joint Technical Task Force to develop a shared roadmap, improve coordination, strengthen engagement with Somali communities abroad, and support strategic initiatives that promote effective diaspora participation in Somalia's development.

The Department of Diaspora Affairs and the Office of the Prime Minister reaffirmed their commitment to working together to harness the expertise and potential of the Somali diaspora as a strategic partner in building a peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous Somalia.

Deputy Minister Welcomes 129 Somali Voluntary Returnees from Libya

Mogadishu, Somalia | 2 July 2026

H.E. Hassan Mohamed Ali, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia, today received 129 Somali nationals who voluntarily returned home from Libya under the Voluntary Humanitarian Return programme. Of the returnees, 110 arrived at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu, while 19 landed in Hargeisa.

The Deputy Minister welcomed the returnees home and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting Somali citizens abroad and supporting their safe, dignified, and sustainable reintegration upon their return. Representatives of the Office of the Special Envoy to the President on Refugees, the National Commission for Refugees and IDPs (NCRI), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Somalia attended the reception, underscoring the importance of continued cooperation in assisting vulnerable Somali migrants.

Prime Minister Opens Somalia Diaspora Centre

H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre, Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia, was today welcomed at the Headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation by H.E. Abdisalam Ali, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, before officially inaugurating the Somalia Diaspora Centre. The Centre will strengthen engagement between the Federal Government and Somali communities abroad and support the implementation of the National Diaspora Policy.

The Prime Minister described the Somali diaspora as one of the nation’s greatest assets, commending its contribution to development and its role in preserving Somalia’s faith, culture, and mother tongue worldwide. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with Somali communities abroad.

H.E. Abdisalam Abdi Ali, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, emphasized the importance of building the confidence and trust of Somalia’s diaspora communities through stronger engagement. Department of Diaspora Affairs Hosts Football Event as Part of Somalia Cultural Diplomacy and Sports Week

The Department of Diaspora Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation hosted a football event as part of the Somalia Cultural Diplomacy and Sports Week, promoting unity, strengthening diaspora engagement, and celebrating Somalia’s cultural heritage through sports.

Organized by the Citizen and Welfare Protection Section, the tournament featured the Diaspora Team and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Team, with the Diaspora Team emerging victorious.
The event was attended by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Hassan Mohamed Ali, the Permanent Secretary, H.E. Hamza Haadow, the Director of Diaspora Affairs, H.E. Ibrahim Guure, alongside senior Ministry officials and diaspora representatives.

The Ministry remains committed to advancing cultural diplomacy, empowering youth, strengthening diaspora ties, and promoting sports as a platform for national unity. The Ministry extends its appreciation to all organizers, participants, and guests who contributed to the success of the event.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia expresses its profound concern regarding reports of engagement by the Israeli administration with the secessionist administration of the northern west region of Somalia outside the framework of the Federal Government of Somalia.

The Federal Republic of Somalia considers any such engagement a violation of its sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, and constitutional order. Somalia remains a sovereign and internationally recognized state, and the Federal Government is the sole legitimate authority empowered to represent the country in international relations.

The Ministry underscores that any political, diplomatic, or other engagement with the secessionist administration that bypasses the Federal Government of Somalia is inconsistent with international law and carries no legal or political standing.
Somalia calls upon the United Nations, the African Union, the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, IGAD, and all international partners to uphold international law, respect Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and condemn actions that undermine the unity and stability of the Somali state.
The Federal Republic of Somalia reserves its sovereign right to take all lawful and necessary measures, through diplomatic, legal, and other appropriate channels, to protect its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity.

Somalia remains committed to peaceful dialogue, regional stability, and constructive engagement with all partners, but it will not accept any action that violates its sovereignty or threatens the unity of the Somali people.
