Press Statement

The office of the commissioner, under the leadership of SPLM IO party in Akobo County, strongly condemns the unilateral and unlawful appointment of Mrs. Nyayual Chambel as Acting Chairlady of the Women’s Association in Akobo County.

This act constitutes a direct breach of the core principles, constitutional provisions, and the independence of the Women’s Association as a civil society organisation.

Such interference is unacceptable and sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the autonomy, credibility, and legitimacy of civil society organisations. It represents a clear abuse of power and shows a disregard for the rule of law and democratic principles.

Furthermore, the imposed appointment of Mrs. Nyayual Chambel is deeply concerning, as her current role within the church holds no institutional or constitutional connection to the Women’s Association. This further questions the legitimacy and intent behind this decision.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AKOBO COUNTY AUTHORITY UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF HON. JOHN WIYUAL L*L CONDEMNS THE CIRCULATION OF A FORGED COUNTY SEAL/STAMP AND FALSE ANNOUNCEMENT BY FORMER COMMISSIONER.

The Office of the Commissioner of Akobo County strongly condemns the false announcement made on 27 March 2026 by the former Commissioner, Mr. James Kueth Makuach, concerning a forged and unlawful seal purported to represent the authority of Akobo County.

The fabricated rectangular stamp being circulated is illegitimate, unrecognized, and was deliberately forged to mislead the public and undermine the established administrative structures of Akobo County. The official and legally recognized county seal remains in full use under the current leadership of the County Administration.

Under the Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU) and in accordance with the 2018 Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan, Akobo County was duly allocated to the SPLM-IO to be jointly administered in collaboration with other political parties. The current county leadership continues to operate lawfully within this framework.
Recent actions by elements of the SSPDF-IG, including the unlawful overrunning of Akobo County and attempts to reinstate the previously relieved commissioner, represent a direct violation of the peace agreement and an unwarranted interference in the administration of the county. The use of the forged stamp by SPLM-IG elements further demonstrates an intent to create confusion, disrupt governance, and misrepresent legitimate authority.

The Office of the Commissioner reassures the people of Akobo County, partners, and the wider public that the legitimate county administration remains intact and continues to execute its mandate in accordance with the laws of South Sudan and the RTGoNU agreement.

Akobo County calls upon all stakeholders, national institutions, peace partners, and the International community to denounce the use of forged government instruments and support the protection of lawful governance structures as stipulated in the peace agreement.

PUBLIC SAFETY MESSAGE TO OUR COMMUNITY ABOUT RETURNING TO WALGAK / AKOBO WEST

The Office of the Executive Director wishes to speak to you with honesty and care during this difficult time.
We understand how deeply everyone longs to return home to rebuild, to see familiar places, and to be with loved ones.

Home is important to all of us. But at this moment, the situation on the ground remains very tense and unpredictable. Armed groups, including SSPDF and Agwelek militia forces involved in the recent destruction, are still present in the area.
Because of this, returning now would place your lives in great danger. Your safety is our highest concern, and we cannot in good conscience encourage anyone to go back until conditions improve.
Please, for your own protection and for the well being of your families, do not attempt to return at this time. We will continue monitoring the situation closely and will inform you immediately when it becomes safe to go home.
We ask for your understanding during this challenging period. Ignoring this warning may put you at serious risk, and we do not want any harm to come to you.
Stay safe, stay patient, and stay hopeful. We are committed to working toward the day when all of us can return home safely.

28 March 2026
Akobo County, Jonglei State (SPLM IO)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Office of the Commissioner, Akobo County, wishes to urgently inform the public and the broader Jonglei community that a series of coordinated attacks occurred yesterday across several locations in Akobo County.

Yesterday, SSPDF, Anywaa, and Murle militias attacked Akobo Tiergol, Nyikaan, Wic Lolä, Ugal (Lil), and Akobo Gidim (Old Akobo).
These incidents follow the Bichbich Conference and Akobo Mobilization Tour, led by the Jonglei State Government under Riek G*i Kok and GPAA leadership under Gola Boyoi Gola. These have mobilized Murle youth targeting the Lou Nuer community, especially in Akobo County and nearby areas.

We advise residents, especially IDPs in Akobo Tiergol and surrounding areas, to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary movements, stay alert, and distance from individuals like Riek G*i Kok and Kueth Makuach involved in harmful activities.
Criminal youth from GPAA and Alali Payam conducted cattle raids within Akobo, but local youth recovered some cattle amidst tragic losses.

The Office of the Commissioner strongly condemns these organized and deliberate acts of aggression. We call upon all relevant authorities, peace partners, and security institutions to take immediate action to ensure the safety and protection of civilians in Akobo County.

Our community must remain united, alert, and resilient during this challenging period.
We extend our deepest condolences to all victims and the families of those who lost their lives in these tragic incidents.
May their souls rest in peace.
