Addis Ababa/Juba, September 3, 2026 — Hon. Dr. Labanya Margaret Mathya, Minister of Trade and Industry, held a bilateral meeting with Hon. Orbis Helaf Orbis, Minister of Commerce and Tourism of Djibouti, to discuss strengthening trade cooperation under the Horn of Africa Initiative (HoAI) regional framework.

The two ministers discussed promoting trade through the Djibouti–Ethiopia–South Sudan–Uganda (DESSU) Corridor, linking the Port of Djibouti to South Sudan through Ethiopia.

The two ministers discussed potential areas of cooperation in trade and industry aimed at strengthening economic ties and benefiting both sister nations.

Dr. Labanya reaffirmed South Sudan’s commitment to working closely with the Government and people of Somalia, while appreciating the important contribution of the Somali business community to South Sudan’s economy.

Addis Ababa/Juba, September 3, 2026—South Sudan and other Horn of Africa countries have endorsed a regional Trade Facilitation Roadmap in Addis Ababa. Under the theme: “One Region, One share economic space: From Political commitment to Regional action.”

Juba, August 31, 2026—The Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Dr. Labanya Margaret Mathya, today held a crucial meeting with Hon. Samuel Duwar Deng Duwar, the Chief Whip of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) and Eng. Mayen Deng Alier, Chairperson of the Specialized Committee for Trade and Industry.
The meeting discussed pertinent issues concerning the Financial Bills for the Fiscal Year 2026/2027 related to trade and the National Bureau of Standards.
The focus was placed on ensuring consumer safety in fuel and food products across the country.

Juba, August 20, 2026—The Ministry of Trade and Industry met with South Sudanese manufacturers to discuss challenges affecting the manufacturing sector and ways to strengthen local production.

During the meeting, Hon. Dr. Labanya Margaret Mathya, Minister of tread and industry directed manufacturers to stop producing toxic products that may pose risks to public health and the environment. She emphasized the need for manufacturers to comply with safety and quality standards while promoting a responsible and sustainable industrial sector in South Sudan.

Juba, August 20, 2026— The Ministry of Trade and Industry has held a consultative meeting with the Car Dealers Association and the Chamber of Commerce to discuss challenges affecting the importation of brand-new vehicles into South Sudan. Hon. Dr. Labanya Margaret Mathya, Minister of Trade and Industry, emphasized the importance of importing latest cars that are less than 10 years from the manufacturing period into the country.

Juba, August 19, 2026—The Ministry of Trade and Industry has held a meeting with the Pakistanis Honorary Consul to South Sudan, Mr. Shahid Sajjad Hussain, to discuss areas of investment and economic cooperation between the two countries. The meeting focused on a land request for the establishment of a Smart City, a project expected to include electricity, accommodation facilities and office spaces.

Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Dr. Labanya Margaret Mathya, encouraged Pakistan to invest in e-trading and digital financial markets to strengthen online commerce, promote digital economic activities and provide young people with opportunities to engage in productive online businesses in strengthening the country’s financial and economic systems.

Juba, August 14, 2026—The Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Dr. Labanya Margaret Mathya convened a meeting aimed at defining the roles and responsibilities of institutions operating under the Ministry.

The meeting resolved that Certificates of Origin (CoO) will remain under the mandate of the Chamber of Commerce, The Consumer and Competition Authority (CCA) will be overseeing consumer protection, fair competition and market enforcement. The institutions also agreed to develop a coordination framework/MoU to harmonize mandates, strengthen collaboration and improve efficiency in the country’s trade and business environment.
