Rest In Peace after a lifetime of service!
US Army
Juan Cancino's military career began on October 17, 1966, when he enlisted in the United States Army. As a reconnaissance sergeant, he served three consecutive tours in Vietnam and spent time in Germany and Italy.
His Army schooling included parachute, pathfinder, reconnaissance, ranger, and special operations warfare at Fort Benning, Ga. He attended the 7th Army Staff NCO Academy at Bad Toez, Germany, and the Special Security and Intelligence Agency School at Fort Gordon, Ga.
US Marine Corps
In October 1978, he transferred from the Army to the Marine Corps. While with the Marines, Cancino saw action in Lebanon, Grenada, and Panama. He was also stationed at Camp Lejune, N.C.; Camp Pendleton, Calif.; the Pentagon; and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. During his career with the Marines, Cancino served as an artillery scout observer and fire support operations chief, interrogator-translator, and counterintelligence special agent.
His Marine Corps training included the counterintelligence special agents academy and interrogator-translator and strategic de-briefing courses at Fort Huachuca, Ariz., and intelligence analysis training in Norfolk, Va. He also attended the staff non-commissioned officers' academy at Quantico, Va.
Cancino retired from the Marine Corps in August 1990.
U.S. Customs Service
In October 1991, Cancino joined the U.S. Customs Service as an inspector at JFK International Airport. He soon joined the contraband enforcement team and was the first inspector to be selected for the aircraft search team, where he made several seizures of drugs and currency. He wrote an aircraft search manual for inspectors. He was a supervisory inspector in baggage and was responsible for seizures as a result.
Military decorations
Cancino's decorations include the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, four Bronze Stars with "V" device, a Purple Heart, a Meritorious Service Medal, and two Air Medals with "V" device. He also received the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and other service and foreign awards.

Congratulations to SSG Zachary Babin, 264th Medical Battalion, the newest Drill Sergeant of the Year for MEDCoE. After a 3-day test that included ACFT, rifle qualification, land navigation, and tests of Warrior Drills, medical and Drill Sergeant skills, he emerged victorious among an elite field of competitors.
SFC Richard Kennedy, 232nd Medical Battalion, is MEDCoE's DSOY competition runner-up.
Great work was done by all competitors who displayed what it means to be the backbone of the U.S. Army while dodging storms and torrential rain to compete.
Special thanks to the staff and cadre who ran a spectacular and challenging event.
We would also like to thank our community partners, including the Texas Society Daughters of the American Revolution, USAA, First Command, and the USO, for participating in today's awards ceremony and supporting our Soldiers and Families.
SSG Babin will represent MEDCoE in TRADOC's DSOY competition later this year.

FORT CAVAZOS, Texas — The first tanks bound for the Army's 250th Birthday Parade in Washington, D.C. started moving May 21, 2025.

The tanks, which began loading from Fort Cavazos are among dozens of armored vehicles departing from the huge central Texas post to take part in the Army's 250th Birthday Celebration. Most of the journey will be via train.

"The Army's 250th birthday is a once-in-a-lifetime event," said Col. Kamil Sztalkoper, director of public affairs, III Armored Corps. "This is a chance to see our Soldiers, our leaders and the world-class force on full display in our nation's capital. We look forward to being a part of history."

The Army is celebrating its 250th birthday on June 14 with multiple events. The national-level celebration will include a day-long festival on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., a parade and a spectacular fireworks display. The festival will feature displays of Army equipment, military demonstrations, activities for kids, musical performances and a fitness competition. Parade planning is actively underway, with officials anticipating approximately 150 vehicles, 50 aircraft, and 6,600 Soldiers to highlight the Army’s 250 years of service to the nation.

Around half those vehicles will come from Fort Cavazos, including all the heaviest-hitting tank units.

Memorial Day: More Than a Weekend
There’s nothing wrong with enjoying the weekend. The camping trips, the barbecues, the cold drinks and warm weather—those are the blessings of peace and freedom. And those blessings exist because of sacrifice.
But to be honest, Memorial Day is not just another day off.
It’s not about honoring those who are serving or have served. That’s what Veterans Day and Armed Forces Day are for.
Memorial Day is different. It’s sacred.
It’s about the men and women who gave their lives in defense of this Country. It’s about the ones who never came home. It’s for the families who carry their loss every single day—not just one weekend in May.
This day is for the 18-year-old who didn’t make it past their first deployment. The parent who left behind children who now only have photos and folded flags. The quiet names etched in stone, remembered in silence.
We owe them more than a passing mention. We owe them a moment—of silence, stillness, of reflection, of gratitude.
So yes, fire up the grill. Laugh with family. Enjoy the freedom they gave you.
But don’t forget those brave souls who paid for it.
Because Memorial Day isn’t about how we celebrate.
It’s about why we remember.

10 JANUARY 2007 – IRAQ SURGE CAMPAIGN BEGINS
On this date in 2007, President George W. Bush publicly announced a "surge" in U.S. military strength in Iraq to fight an al-Qaeda-inspired insurgency and quell the sectarian violence between Sunni and Shi'ite paramilitary groups that prevented the new government from establishing authority and maintaining stability.
Five additional Army brigades/brigade combat teams (BCT) were sent, including elements of the 1st, 2d, and 3d Infantry Divisions, and 82d Airborne Division, to reinforce the twenty U.S. brigade-sized units already serving with the Coalition effort.
In April, the president extended the tours of most units already in Iraq from twelve to fifteen months. General David H. Petraeus, who had recently led the revision of the Counterinsurgency (COIN) field manual, assumed command of Multi-National Force - Iraq (MNF-I) from outgoing commander, General George H. Casey Jr.
Reinforced and under new leadership, Coalition forces conducted the Surge Campaign with aggressive operations that concentrated both on destroying extremist fighters and protecting the Iraqi people.
At the same time the U.S. supported Sunni militias as they turned against al-Qaeda and joined with American troops and Iraqi security forces. When it ended on 31 December 2008, the Surge Campaign had contributed to the continued defeat of al-Qaeda in Iraq and limited the influence of the Shi'ite Jaysh al-Mahdi and other anti-Coalition actors, as well as a reduction in sectarian violence.
