Today is the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Little Big Horn (or “Greasy Grass”). The invading forces of the US 7th Cavalry, led by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer, were defeated by forces of the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes led by military chiefs Gall and Crazy Horse on 25 June 1876. In the new International Socialism journal, Martin Empson uses the anniversary of the Little Big Horn as a way of exploring the history of settler colonialism. He concentrates on North America, while explaining why settler-colonial states (From the US and Canada to Argentina, Australia, South Africa and Palestine) do not fit a single theoretical framework. The ongoing struggles of Indigenous peoples have ensured that the question of Indigenous freedom and liberation is seen as an integral part of the struggle against capitalism, and they remain central to our struggles today.

At the next Marx21 Zoom meeting next Sunday, will be discussing how threatening is the new wave of government repression in the US.
The Trump administration is doubling down on the violent rhetoric against all opposition and authoritarian crackdown on activists. Examples against anti-ICE activists include the extreme sentencing given the Texas “Prairieland” protesters, and the trial of the “Minnesota 15” in Minneapolis. Of course, like the killing of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, the attacks on activists are enabled by the larger increase in attacks on immigrant workers, including the murders of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Texas, and Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Maine by ICE agents. Now the FBI has signaled it will not be investigating charges of assault by ICE agents, while branches of the federal government are turning against the left.
These moves, and the vindictive far-right language in recent speeches by Trump and Stephen Miller, are attempting to set in motion an expanded infrastructure of repression outlined in Trump’s National Security Presidential Memorandum 7 (NSPM-7) in September 2025, urging prosecution of left-wing groups, and designating “Antifa” as “domestic terrorists.” They are targeting already limited voting rights and legal recourse, traditional press freedoms, and our basic rights to protest.
But it is not all going their way. The shootings of Araujo and Guerrero have sparked new protests. Trump’s popularity remains low, and is eroding even in his own base. Resistance to this attempted intimidation must be tied to continued activism around issues like immigration, Palestine, trans lives, and workers’ rights. Such attacks are not unprecedented (see the 1920’s “red scare” or the 1960s “COINTELPRO,”), and the present wave was prefigured in the attack on pro-Palestine campus encampments under Biden. A return to the pre-Trump status quo would not be an answer, even if it were possible.

We are seeing at the moment a handful of simultaneous eruptions around the world. They are responding to local issues and conditions, but have in common a feeling of desperation combined with a rejection of politics as usual. Below, Annon George discusses the continuing protests in Albania. In Mexico tens of thousands of teachers launched an indefinite strike this month, with protesters occupying key spaces, scuffling with brutal riot police, and bringing Mexico City to a standstill on the eve of the World Cup. In Portugal, hundreds of thousands of workers staged a second general strike last week against the right-wing government’s anti-worker “reforms.” Most impressive is Bolivia, where an uprising has been going on for months now, including mass indigenous mobilizations, close to 100 highway blockades, and a spreading general strike. We hope to report more from Bolivia soon, where masses are now resisting the military and effective martial law, in scenes reminiscent of the events that toppled leaders in 2003 and 2005. Repeal of neo-liberal “reforms” are central demands in Portugal, Bolivia, and Mexico, and, as Annon reports, part of the background in Albania. In all, the lack of a sizable, embedded revolutionary organization is notable. But, in a period of general crisis, there are still reasons our rulers still fear revolution. The ghastly pogroms against migrants in Belfast and Britain were a particularly horrific but recognizable sign of a growing far-right, enabled by racist actions of bourgoise goverments. But the responce has been heartening, and a lesson for us all.

This is Belfast.

Anti-racist. Anti-fascist. United.

As collective punishment was inflicted on our neighbours, it was not the state that defended our communities. It was working-class people. It was migrants. It was tenants’ unions, trade unionists, community activists and solidarity campaigns who stood together and acted as one.

The answer to these racist attacks is the same answer to every crisis created by inequality, exploitation and ruling-class attempts to divide us: solidarity.

No one should have to live in fear, not women facing violence in their homes, not children fleeing racist attacks, not migrants targeted by mobs, and not working-class communities abandoned by those in power.

Safety means far more than the absence of violence or threat. It means homes people can afford, services people can rely on, youth provision, mental health care, and communities with the resources to look after one another. The answer to violence is not racist revenge. It is solidarity, care and collective struggle for a society where every person can live safely and with dignity.

When politicians and the wealthy seek to pit worker against worker, tenant against tenant, local against migrant, our task is to build unity from below. The strength that filled Belfast’s streets was the strength of an international working class refusing racism, refusing fascism and refusing to allow a tragedy to be exploited to divide us.
