In supporting the The Deputy Prime Minister's Office Eswatini the Taiwan Africa Vegetable Initiative - Eswatini recently hosted the elderly at the Marlkerns Research Station. These elderly community members from the Hhohho Region were treated to tasting healthy and nutritious traditional african vegetables meals. They were also taken through an educational and informative session onthe health and nutritional benefits of vegetables.

The honourable Deputy Prime Minister, Hon Thulisile Dladla spoke to the elderly and encouraged them to choose healthier eating habits for them to avoid illnesses and to live longer.

It was great noting that most of them know the vegetables and attribute their good health despite their age to them. They committed to continue eating them and also to plant them intheir backyard gardens.

The TAVI project in collaboration with other partners seek to increase the consumption and production of the traditional african vegetables inthe country and through the generous support of the Taiwan Government, indeed this dream is attainable.

His interest to venture into farming was evoked by noting the income his wife was making. Suddenly he realized that the income made through the farming of traditional vegetables far surpassed his monthly work income. It is at this point that he decided to resign from his formal job and join his wife in the farming business.

Through sheer determination and hard work, he has grown into a remarkable farmer, now producing vegetable produce for commercial purposes for a local school, local market and other farmers who buy from him and his wife for reselling in other markets.

Mr Maziya beams with a smile as he speaks about his thriving farming business. He narrates how his son through shadowing them has also ventured into farming with his family. His son as he narrates was taken through school and college using money from their farming business.

We hope many other small holder and commercial farmers learn from this inspiring farmer and his journey to success. Maziya is supported by the Taiwan Africa Vegetable Initiative - Eswatini project as a champion farmer. The project is generously funded by the Taiwan Government through the Taiwan in Eswatini , 外交部 Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ROC(Taiwan)(Taiwan and works in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture Eswatini

🌻The Taiwan Africa Vegetable Initiative - Eswatini project supports communities to achieve sustainable livelihoods and work towards assisting small holder farmers to gain market access and take their produce to the markets. 🌿

Thrive for Good SA is one of the community-based organisations that the project supports to ensure communities are trained on organic farming practices, empowered on the benefits of the production of traditional vegetables both for subsistence 🥙and commercial farming purposes.

" Beyond helping us feed our families, TAVI has created stronger bonds between community members because we all come out to work in our community garden. We learn, plant our crops and sow to feed our families together",

"For us, each seed planted is a step toward health, empowerment, and a greener future. This workshop has not only built skills but also strengthened community bonds. We are growing health and hope, one garden bed at a time. 💚, Trainer, Nompumeleo, Thrive for Good SA

🌱Ever heard about Black Mamba Chillies🌶🌶....the ones that sell “dangerously tasty” chillies? Yep, you guessed right!

Well for the past weeks the World Vegetable center has been in consultative discussions with them for purposes of building sustainable livelihoods and income generation for small-holder farmers in Eswatini.

Both Black Mamba and World Vegetable Center in their work, venture beyond sustainability they promote regeneration in order to protect our environment and communities and do so by supporting and uplifting small-scale local growers who embrace regenerative farming methods.

The coming together of these two entities can make a huge socio-economic positive impact to the lives of small-holder farmers, their families, communities and further enhance the agri-business space of the country.🌻

Such a partnership can stimulate the farmers and help them in overcoming the challenges of HIV, drought and poverty, to write a new story for the future.

The greatest news ever will be that from this great collaboration the small holder farmers will get to learn and share their organic farming knowledge with other people in their communities, helping to promote food security, and improve the soil fertility and biodiversity of our beautiful Eswatini.

We look forward to a life-changing impactful partnership with “dangerously tasty, nutritious and healthy meals” 🍲

🌻Money, Gifts and Treasures....With love from the Soil😍

Last week Thursday was such a memorable day for learners from 16 schools across the country. They received gifts Ianthe form of cash prizes, hampers and appreciation certificates for displaying their school gardens, produce and meals cooked by the different school cooks.

Joy was in the air for all as they held their breath in anticipation of the biggest winner of the day. At the end of the day they all proved to be winners as each school walked away with a prize or certificate.

The schools garden competition is an innovative and creative way to motivate the learners, teachers and school cooks competition is to encourage learners, schools and their parents about the importance of traditional African vegetables.

The learners and their teachers possess significant potential for expanding their knowledge on safe vegetable production, particularly of traditional African vegetables and consumption which play a critical role in improving leaners’ health, livelihoods, and preserving agrobiodiversity. We anticipate a bigger competition with more school, excitement, joy and veggies next year🍀
