The Government of Eswatini, through the Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Affairs (MTEA), Department of Forestry and the Department of Meteorology are preparing to report for the second cycle reporting under the Paris Agreement, Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF), which requires the submission of Biennial Transparency Reports (BTRs). These reports provide a rigorous account of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventories and progress toward Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). A critical component of this transparency effort for the forestry sector is the development of the REDD+ Technical Annex and the updated National Inventory Report (NIR).

To meet these requirements, the ministry is launching the second phase of data collection (2023–2025) to ensure that national forest data is consistent, transparent, and aligned with international reporting standards. The ministry through the climate change under Meteorology Department hosted the workshop for two days to equip the analysist on data collection and analysis so to make it easy for the report that is expected from the ministry to be reported. Different stakeholders were invited which are EEA, Land use department from MOA and ENTC

3rd Responsible Tourism Conference
The Department of Forestry participated in the 3rd Responsible Tourism Conference hosted by Piggs Peak Hotel, bringing together tourism operators, industry leaders, and key stakeholders to engage in discussions on sustainable and responsible tourism, with a focus on translating action into meaningful impact.
During the conference, the Department of Forestry challenged participants to incorporate indigenous plants, particularly endemic and critically endangered species into their green spaces, positioning these as part of Eswatini’s natural heritage and a distinctive value proposition and storytelling element for visitors and guests.
The Department also shared its role, progress, and insights on the proposed declaration of approximately 105 hectares of Piggs Peak Hotel’s natural area as a Flora Reserve under Section 3 of the Flora Protection Act, No. 5 of 2001.
A congratulatory note was extended to Piggs Peak Hotel for successfully hosting the conference, now in its third instalment, and for its continued leadership in advancing responsible tourism in Eswatini.

🌱🌳Today we celebrate the most important day of Forestry. As the world stands together to celebrate and commemorate this day, even Eswatini Forest is not excluded from the celebration. 21 March 2026 is a special day to nature as on this day we are all expected to plant a tree. This years theme is "FOREST and ECONOMIES"
International Day of Forests is a global observance established by the United Nations to raise awareness about the importance of forests and trees for people and the planet. Countries, organizations, and communities celebrate it through activities like:
1.Tree planting campaigns
2.Environmental education
3.Forest conservation initiatives

🌱 Theme for 2026: FORESTS and ECONOMIES

The 2026 theme highlights how forests are not only ecological assets but also key drivers of economic development.
Forests support over 1.6 billion people through livelihoods and income. They provide millions of jobs globally in forestry and related sectors. Forests strengthen agriculture, water systems, and food security. They are often undervalued and underfunded despite their economic importance

The goal is to promote sustainable forest management as a pathway to economic growth, poverty reduction, and climate resilience. This matters to Eswatini because it contributes to rural livelihoods and community forestry, also in timber and non-timber forest products. There is also watershed protection and soil conservation. Not forgetting the most important part which is climate change mitigation, which we are all part of and expected to play our part in.

For developing economies, forests are often a foundation for inclusive growth and sustainability.
To the Department, Stakeholders, NGOs and even communities we are expected to plant trees or support reforestation projects. Raise awareness in there communities. Promote sustainable use of forest resources and lastly engage in conservation or forestry programs.
