Today, on World Earth Day, we were proud to join the University of Eswatini (UNESWA) at the Luyengo Campus for the Climate Change Commemoration Day, held under the theme “Mitigating Climate Change.” The event provided an important platform to reflect on collective efforts toward building climate resilience and promoting environmental sustainability in Eswatini.

As part of the commemoration, INMACOM participated through an information gazebo, where brochures were distributed to raise awareness about our work and initiatives, particularly those addressing climate change under the Global Environment Facility (GEF‑8) framework. Through GEF‑8, INMACOM promotes integrated and cross‑sectoral approaches that address the interconnected challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation, supporting sustainable development outcomes across the three Member States, The Republic of South Africa, Mozambique and the Kingdom of Eswatini.

The event was organized under the Integrating Mobility, Digital Tools, and Climate Education (IMPACT‑ED) Project to Address Terrestrial Plant Diversity and Conservation in a Changing Climate, a European Union funded initiative involving five African universities, the University of Eswatini, and one European university. The project seeks to nurture a new generation of climate responsive African graduates and professionals by embedding climate change education within university curricula.

The Climate Change Commemoration Day served as both a celebration and a call to action, bringing together stakeholders from the environmental, climate, water, and agricultural sectors. The programme featured expert presentations, interactive discussions, and poster exhibitions, all aimed at fostering meaningful dialogue on shared responsibility for environmental stewardship and climate resilience.

On April 17th, INMACOM held an important preparatory meeting ahead of the upcoming Council of Ministers gathering our top political and decision-making platform.

Set for June 2026 in South Africa, this high-level meeting will bring together Ministers from South Africa, Mozambique, and Eswatini to align on strategies for transboundary water governance, source-to-sea management, and institutional strengthening under the GEF 8 programme.

The meeting emphasized the need for effective communication, stakeholder engagement, and boosting INMACOM’s visibility as a regional leader in shared water resources management. This gathering showcases our political authority, strategic vision, and shared commitment to sustainable water management across the region.

INMACOM Conducts Visit to Aquaculture Projects in Mpumalanga Province

INMACOM recently conducted a site visit to aquaculture projects in Acornhoek / Thulamahashe, in Mpumalanga Province, as well as at Ngodwana Aquaponics, under the GEF-8 Project.

The purpose of the visit was to gather experiences, engage with aquaculture practitioners, and identify future opportunities for implementing this initiative within the INMACOM context.

This initiative highlights the importance of sustainable aquaculture in supporting local livelihoods, strengthening food security, and promoting economic development in communities.

Transforming Lives in Catuane, Matutuíne District

The Administrative Post of Catuane is now ready for the launch of construction works on the Catuane Water Supply System, a milestone that will bring safe, reliable water to thousands of people living near the borders of Mozambique, South Africa, and Eswatini.

This achievement follows extensive studies, institutional coordination, and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between INMACOM and the contractor on 20 March, paving the way for implementation. With equipment mobilisation now underway, the project is entering its ex*****on phase.

Beyond infrastructure, the initiative is grounded in community engagement and sustainability. Local leaders and residents have actively shaped solutions, while Phase 1 of the Catuane Groundwater Project ensures evidence based technical approaches for long-term resilience.

Implemented under the framework of regional cooperation through INMACOM, this project reflects a shared commitment by Mozambique, Eswatini, and South Africa to tackle water security challenges in a region increasingly affected by climate variability.

Impact: Improved access to clean water, stronger community participation, and enhanced resilience against climate risks.

Today, INMACOM joined the Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy, alongside water sector partners, to commemorate World Water Day 2026 at Phonjwane Sports Ground under the Gilgali Constituency.

The event was graced by Principal Secretary Ms. Lindiwe Mbingo, representing Hon. Minister HRH Prince Lonkhokhela, who emphasized the critical role of water and sanitation in achieving gender equality and sustainable development.

The highlight was the call for women’s active participation in water management and decision-making structures. The Principal Secretary underscored that women must not only benefit from water services but also play a leading role in shaping policies and managing resources.

This commemoration reinforced the importance of inclusive governance in water management, ensuring that communities thrive through equitable access and shared responsibility.

Today, INMACOM Executive Secretary Sindy Mthimkhulu proudly participated in the Post-Flood Water Resources Symposium 2026: Challenges and Perspectives, convened by the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources (MOPHRH) in Maputo.

INMACOM was honored to be invited by the Minister, His Excellency Fernando Rafael. This high-level dialogue brought together policymakers, academics, engineers, and strategic partners to reflect on the devastating impacts of the 2025/2026 floods on Mozambique’s river basins and critical infrastructure. Key discussions focused on early warning systems, structural resilience, regional cooperation, and financing mechanisms to strengthen national and regional preparedness.

In addition to contributing to the technical dialogue, INMACOM supported the symposium with branded t-shirts and banners, reinforcing its commitment to visibility, engagement, and collective ownership of solutions. This visible presence reflects INMACOM’s dedication to strengthening hydrological risk management, advancing regional collaboration, and promoting inclusive approaches to water governance across Southern Africa.

Together, we are working towards a more resilient future where communities are protected, infrastructure is stronger, and water resources are managed sustainably.

On 06 March 2026, INMACOM joined partners at Kruger National Park, Skukuza for a workshop on Biological Invasions and Fisheries. The focus: tackling barriers to management, training needs, equipment requirements, and research gaps.

Together with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, University of Leeds, South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity, National Research Foundation, and Limpopo partners, we explored how invasive species affect fisheries, ecosystems, and human wellbeing.

This collaboration is about sharing knowledge, building capacity, and strengthening governance to protect our rivers and communities.

Benchmarking Visit: Aquaponics Farm (EATtFresh), Acornhoek, Mpumalanga

INMACOM joined KOBWA, the Mpumalanga Fisheries Department, and local partners on a knowledge sharing mission to the EATtFresh aquaponics farm near Acornhoek, Mpumalanga. This innovative, youth-led project integrates tilapia farming with hydroponic vegetable production, showcasing a climate smart, circular agriculture model that uses just 10% of the water required by conventional farming. The purpose of this benchmarking exercise is to explore the introduction of this pioneering aquaponics model at Maguga Dam, with the aim of strengthening food security, empowering local communities, and promoting sustainable water-smart agriculture.

Key Highlights from the Visit:

• Ecosystem impact: Fish waste is recycled to fertilize crops, reducing nutrient

runoff and conserving scarce water resources.

• Livelihoods: Youth and women are at the forefront, gaining skills and income

through training and out-grower schemes.

• Outputs: An aquaponics facility powered by solar energy, producing fresh

fish and vegetables year-round.

• Governance: Strong collaboration between government, NGOs, and local

communities, aligning with INMACOM’s transboundary water management

goals.

• Market potential: Supplying eco-tourism and local retailers with premium

organic produce.

This benchmarking exercise confirmed that aquaponics can strengthen food security, empower communities, and protect ecosystems. Lessons learned will inform Eswatini’s upcoming aquaculture initiatives, ensuring sustainable livelihoods and shared benefits across the Incomati–Maputo basin.

Together, we are building a future of inclusive, water-smart agriculture that supports both people and nature.
