The 5th edition of the in Eswatini kicked off with a full house on 13 May 2026 at the Mbabane Theatre Club where almost 200 cinema lovers attended the first of the four-day movie screening.

Like in previous editions, this year’s Film Festival, which ends on Saturday, 16 May, was again a Team Europe effort with 10 European Union (EU) Member States (Austria, Cyprus, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal and Sweden) participating.

Not only are European movies being shown but also Eswatini movies, which kicked off the programme on 13 May with four spellbinding short movies being shown – three of them having been shot using smartphones.

One of the main attractions in this year’s festival is a movie called ‘Mr Nobody Against Putin’, a movie which has won an Oscar.

The festival, held under the theme ‘Stronger Together’ is organised within the context of the 50th anniversary of the partnership between the European Union and the Kingdom of Eswatini.

EU Political Officer, Jose Becerra, speaking on behalf of EU Ambassador to Eswatini, Karsten Mecklenburg, during the opening day of the festival said for 50 years the EU and Eswatini have worked together to build a future rooted in partnership, opportunity and shared progress.

Becerra said through initiatives such as the Film Festival, the EU also recognises the importance of empowering young people and ensuring their active participation in shaping decisions that effect their lives, particularly in the cultural and creative sectors.

“Between 2021 and 2027, the EU has dedicated over SZL 500 million to support youth in Eswatini, focusing on skills development and opportunities that enable and contribute to sustainable development. This includes significant support for the local creative industries such as film, music and visual arts,” said Becerra.

Becerra then thanked Alliance française de Mbabane for organising the Film Festival and the 10 EU Member States for supporting it.

This opening night also saw three local filmmakers being honoured with cash prizes for winning a recent Smartphone Short Film Competition which preceded the Film Festival.

These winners were Mxolisi Hlophe who won the first prize (SZL 4 000), Siphosethu Sibandze who won the second prize (SZL 3 000) and Vusi Langa who won the third prize (SZL 2 000).

The European Union (EU) remains a reliable and predictable partner which invests in mutually beneficial relations with partner countries such as Eswatini based on trust and respect.

EU Ambassador to Eswatini, Karsten Mecklenburg, said this on 08 May 2026 on the occasion of Europe Day 2026 commemorated at House on Fire in Malkerns.

In attendance during this colourful event were the representative of His Majesty King Mswati III, Prince Gcina, Cabinet Ministers, Parliamentarians, civil society organisations and many other stakeholders.

In his speech, the Ambassador said the EU, as a reliable and predictable partner, defends and promotes a rules-based international order in the mutual interest of all – big and small countries and their citizens and not the law of the strongest. In addition, he said the EU strongly defends the role of multilateral institutions, international law and cooperation.

“At the same we are of course not naïve and we are aware that the world is changing rapidly and is becoming fragmented. International cooperation has in many aspects again turned into competition or even war. Common global challenges, including climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) appear to lose attention,” said the Ambassador.

He added: “However, as the global challenges grow, so does our determination to remain a reliable consistent, predictable and principled partner. We are a partner for prosperity, committed to open economies and rules-based trade that contribute to sustainable development. We are also a partner to promote mutual economic resilience and security because lasting security depends on shared prosperity and cooperation.”

The Ambassador said this was the reason why the EU was this year celebrating 50 years of partnership with the Kingdom of Eswatini.
He said over the last 50 years, the EU, as a reliable and committed partner for Eswatini, has contributed billions of Emalangeni to help the Kingdom improve access to clean and potable water, electricity, free primary education, health including access to vaccines, sustainable and climate-smart agriculture, infrastructure development such as roads and bridges, strengthening of governance, democracy and human rights, social protection, disaster risk management, institutional capacity building and trade facilitation.

To celebrate this milestone, the Ambassador said, the EU has produced short videos of testimonials from 50 Emaswati beneficiaries as well a booklet containing images and the testimonials.

“The question is why have we done this? The answer is that we have thought that, instead of getting into numbers and lengthy project lists, the most convincing way of telling the story of our 50-year impact on the lives of Emaswati, their communities, businesses and families was perhaps through the short videos and the commemorative booklet,” said the Ambassador.

He then congratulated Eswatini for taking up a very active role at the Organisation of the African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), including the hosting, in Ezulwini next week, of the 1st session of the Africa-EU Parliamentary Assembly under the Samoa Agreement, which brings together 79 Member States of the OACPS and the 27 EU Member States.

The Ambassador paid tribute to His Majesty King Mswati III and the government of Eswatini on their firm commitment to the OACPS.

During the event, the EU also showcased, through a Photo Exhibition, the impact of EU-Eswatini cooperation over the last 50 years.

The Photo Exhibition attracted the interest of many of the attendees.

3RD PARTNERSHIP DIALOGUE BETWEEN EU AND ESWATINI CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF ENGAGEMENT TOWARDS SHARED PROSPERITY

In the context of the 50th anniversary of EU-Eswatini mutual engagement, the Kingdom of Eswatini and the European Union (EU) successfully concluded on 08 May 2026 the 3rd Partnership Dialogue under the new OACPS-EU (Samoa) Agreement reaffirming their commitment to a robust, long-term relationship based on mutual respect and shared values.

The Dialogue was co-chaired by EU Ambassador to Eswatini, Karsten Mecklenburg, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Pholile Shakantu.

The presence of several EU Member States Ambassadors accredited to Eswatini underlined the comprehensive Team Europe approach to this vital partnership.

* Key Outcomes and Areas of cooperation:

Discussions were held upon several of EU-OACPS priority areas for cooperation, including governance, human rights and democracy; peace and security; human and social development; inclusive sustainable economic growth; digital and science policy. The agenda was comprehensive, ensuring alignment with Eswatini's national development priorities and the Government’s Programme of Action.

* Regional and International Context:

With conflicts increasing worldwide since the last Partnership Dialogue in 2025, both sides discussed the current challenges to peace and security and reiterated their commitment to defending effective multilateralism and a rules-based international order.

* Economic, Trade, and Investment:

Both sides committed to fostering stronger trade and investment ties by leveraging the full potential of the EU-SADC Economic Partnership Agreement, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2026, as well as the EU’s current cooperation priority in Eswatini on market-driven skills development and youth empowerment, in addition to numerous ongoing bilateral and regional programmes. The partners discussed future potential opportunities under the EU's Global Gateway strategy as well as bilateral cooperation.

* Good Governance, Rule of Law and Fundamental Freedoms:

The parties discussed about preparations to the 4th cycle of the Universal Period Review of Eswatini, welcomed the numerous advancements on the area of governance, rule of law and fundamental freedoms, but also the work in progress. Options to provide additional assistance, support and expert advice were discussed, including possibly institutional capacity-building and the strengthening of the rule of law.

* Digital and Science Policy:

With the ambition of Eswatini to become a first world status nation, the parties discussed about the potential of digital and science to transform Eswatini into a knowledge-based economy and the various EU support instruments on this matter, including in support of academic exchange and encouraging scientific cooperation, both bilaterally as well as under relevant EU Programmes ERASMUS and HORIZON.

* Looking Ahead:

The Partnership Dialogue is a key mechanism, under the Samoa Agreement, for deepening cooperation for the mutual benefit of both parties. Both Eswatini and the European Union expressed confidence that these open exchanges will accelerate concrete, impactful action, ultimately supporting the Kingdom's drive toward realizing the national vision of attaining first world status through sustained and inclusive growth.

The next Partnership Dialogue will be held in 2027 on a date to be mutually agreed upon.
