The Department of Gender Affairs hosted its final engagement in commemoration of International Day of the Boy Child 2026 on Friday June 5th, when we spent an impactful day at the Wesley Methodist High School, engaging 60 young men.
The day kicked off with an inspiring session from Mr. Andy Missick from the Department of Rehabilitation and Community Services , who shared valuable insights with the boys around accountability, emotional well-being and leadership. He challenged them to remain focused on their education, surround themselves with positive influence and strive to become respectful young men in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Commissioner Fitz Bailey and nine (9) members of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force joined the session and led an engaging round of discussions with the young men, adding new and interesting perspectives. Commissioner Bailey shared his own powerful life story, highlighting what he had to overcome to get to where he is today, and shared key lessons on how the young men could become positive leaders.
The session generated thoughtful discussion, with students posing insightful questions to the Commissioner. One particularly outstanding question “What are your plans for the Turks and Caicos Islands?” sparked meaningful dialogue about the future of the country. In recognition of the students’ active participation, the RTCIPF presented gifts to students who correctly answered questions during the session, as well as to those who asked particularly thoughtful and engaging questions.
To wrap up this impactful day, Ms. Asamoah, our Research and Programme Officer left the boys with the powerful reminder that their past mistakes do not determine their future successes, and encouraged them to keep striving!
Thanks to all our speakers and to the brilliant young men from the WMHS who engaged in this session, reminding us that the future of the Turks and Caicos Islands is in excellent hands!
