Chong Chom Customs House Joins Forces with the Department of Airports and the Department of Disease Control to Strengthen Security at Buriram Airport, Targeting Drug Smuggling Networks That Use Air Passengers as Couriers.
Following a case in which a Thai female flight attendant was searched by Australian customs authorities at Melbourne Airport and allegedly found in possession of one kilogram of he**in, with an estimated street value of more than 11 million baht, which was suspected of having been smuggled into Australia, the Thai Customs Department has strengthened its preventive and enforcement measures.
Mr.Phanthong Loykulnanta, Director-General of the Thai Customs Department, together with MissSuntareeya Twichaprasit, Deputy Director-General, and MissLalita Attapimon, Director of Customs Regional Office 2, has instructed customs officers at all international airports to intensify measures to prevent and suppress the smuggling of narcotics and other prohibited goods.
The enhanced measures include more intensive random inspections of passengers and airline crew members, as well as their checked and carry-on baggage, particularly on inbound and outbound flights assessed as high-risk. The measures are intended to prevent Thailand from becoming a weak link in international drug-trafficking networks and to safeguard the country’s reputation within the international community in combating cross-border narcotics trafficking.
Mr.Prasit Deejongcharoen, Head of Chong Chom Customs House, stated that the Customs House is responsible for customs operations covering three provinces in Thailand’s lower northeastern region—Buriram, Surin, and Nakhon Ratchasima—including Buriram International Airport. The airport handles approximately 3,000 flights and more than 300,000 passengers annually, making it a strategically important aviation hub for the lower northeastern region.
Accordingly, Chong Chom Customs House has strengthened its cooperation with Buriram Airport and the International Communicable Disease Control Office at the airport to improve operational planning, enhance security measures, and expand information sharing across all relevant areas. These efforts are aimed at strengthening public confidence and ensuring the safety of travelers, in line with the policies of the Royal Thai Government, the Ministry of Finance, and the Thai Customs Department.
