Last week, our Ambassador Remco Van Wijngaarden met with Minister of Commerce, Mr. Pichai Naripthaphan. In their meeting, they exchanged views on topics related to trade and investments between Thailand and the Netherlands. The close economic ties between the two Kingdoms go back more than 420 years and as a result:

👉 Trade between our countries totaled over €8.7 billion in 2024, an increase of 36.1% compared to 2023.

👉 From agrifood to tech manufacturing, a wide variety of Dutch businesses are active in Thailand and vice versa.

👉 The Netherlands is the largest EU investor in Thailand, accounting for 55.8% of all EU investments in Thailand.

👉 The Netherlands is the most popular EU destination for Thai Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), representing 8% of total Thai FDI.

The Minister and the Ambassador had a fruitful discussion about the ease of doing business in Thailand, the level playing field for Dutch companies, and possible opportunities to enhance Thai-Dutch cooperation. Discussed in particular were the semiconductor industry and water management. The Netherlands stands ready to further develop its economic relations with Thailand. The Ambassador expressed confidence in the negotiations on the EU-Thailand Free Trade Agreement and welcomed that the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) kicked off the accession process with Thailand.

This year’s International Women’s Day marks the 30th anniversary of the historic Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. While much progress has been made since then, it is rare to find places where women are equally represented in the decisions made about their lives. Consequently, women’s rights remain uncertain and as long as they do, women and girls will face discrimination, reduced opportunities, and limited self-determination.

The world cannot afford to wait for another 30 years to experience gender equality. Therefore, we must invest now in initiatives advancing opportunities for the equal and meaningful participation of women and girls in national, regional, and global discourse and decision-making. It is crucial to support women’s leadership and to hear the needs of girls and women, while recognizing the contributions and perspectives they bring to the table.

The Netherlands is a staunch proponent of women’s rights and our Embassy currently funds multiple projects to advance women’s rights and opportunities in Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia:

- 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 (𝗚𝗕𝗩): our partner International Commission of Jurists improves accountability, effective remedies, and access to justice for survivors of GBV. Taking a rights-based and survivor-centric approach, they train CSOs and lawyers to secure legal redress for GBV survivors and by filling the gaps in domestic legal frameworks to prevent and respond to GBV cases effectively. Last Tuesday, The Netherlands Embassy in collaboration with the Thai Fine Arts Department, hosted a panel discussion at Baan Hollanda in Ayutthaya. The event is a continuation of the "Baan Hollanda Forward" project, which is focused on finding the best management strategies for its future.

Sharing progress updates, best practices, and inputting new ideas for Baan Hollanda, it proved to be a fruitful and engaging afternoon. Through joint discussion, a clear path forward for the fledgling foundation has been conceived. Among other things, new waterway tourism options were explored by use of electric longtail boats. 🚤

The Embassy extends its sincere thanks to the Fine Arts Department and all the partners involved. We look forward to seeing Baan Hollanda reaching its full potential and thriving once more.

In the spirit of Baan Hollanda, a short documentary highlighting the strong ties between Thailand and the Netherlands is currently in production. Stay tuned for more updates! 👀

With great pride we look back on a successful participation in the Bangkok Design Week 2025 ( )! To strengthen collaboration between Thai and Dutch partners on sustainable urban design we co-hosted and organized:

- 𝗠𝗘𝗚𝗔 𝗠𝗔𝗧: showing us the power of recycling waste for public use, all the while leveraging smart design for comfort, style, and tradition
(https://www.bangkokdesignweek.com/en/bkkdw2025/program/123366)

- 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸: bringing the visions of the public for Bangkok’s underutilized land under its Expressways to life through generative AI
(https://www.bangkokdesignweek.com/en/bkkdw2025/program/124905)

- 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗪𝗲 𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲: screening to help visitors imagine how the cycling infrastructure of the future may shape our new urban spaces
(https://www.bangkokdesignweek.com/en/bkkdw2025/program/107130)

Altogether, these projects demonstrated how design can enhance the value, accessibility, and resilience of urban areas to offer inhabitants enjoyable and meaningful public spaces. While highlighting the pressing need for climate adaptation, it bridged experience and creative power from the Netherlands and Thailand to solve global challenges together.

We express our deep thanks to our partners without whom this would not have been possible!

𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗴𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗨𝗸𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 🇺🇦
Today, on the 24th of February, it has been three years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of its neighbour Ukraine. It is a brutal attack on human rights, an assault on European security, and a blatant violation of international law. Millions have been displaced and the Russian regime is giving its all to destroy the homes and identity of the Ukrainian people.

The Netherlands is committed to working with other countries to explore all possibilities to achieve peace for the Ukrainian people. But an eventual peace agreement needs to be just, sustainable and in line with the principles of the UN Charter.

In the meantime, our joint support for Ukraine is more than the sum of its parts. All our contributions – military aid, economic support, reconstruction, humanitarian efforts, accountability, and sanctions – are mutually reinforcing. Together, we can make the difference.

Therefore, all forms of The Netherlands’ and its European partners’ support for Ukraine will continue undiminished, for as long as it takes.
